To cheekily ask for tips on selling DD's car

It's a 2001 Corsa 1.2 with long MOT and in decent condition and good working order. Have advertised in a couple of online places asking £500 expecting to take less but are just getting timewasters so far (and only 2 of them).

Is a car like this actually worth anything these days or does everyone want something newer?

Unfortunately I think you'll struggle, although if it is in good condition you might get £300 as a first car for someone - what mileage has it got?

familycourtq · 30/09/2019 11:54

68000

I would say it's a good first car but I see new drivers driving around in the most stupid new cars these days because its all about the gram.

I wouldn't have thought you'd of had to much trouble selling it tbh, always someone looking for a run around to work etc. When I sell older 2nd hand cars, I go on euro car parts on pay day sale (there's one on now) enter the reg and buy all the cheapest service parts and put in advert comes with full service kit. usually costs about £30 but people love it.

Tensixtysix · 30/09/2019 12:00

Actually if you go onto the 'Honest John' website, a Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 2001 can be worth over £1000.
So £500 isn't too bad.
Is it clean inside and out? Polish it up a bit and fingers crossed Smile

I think that’s a fair enough price, it’s very low mileage for the age. I’d certainly consider it if I was in the market for a cheap runaround. Facebook marketplace is good for selling cars, have you advertised it on there?

SmileyGiraffe · 30/09/2019 12:04

A poorly built car that is effectively old enough to go to university will never be worth £500.

I'm in a car sales facebook group and the amount of timewasters who lowball on cars like yours is ridiculous. I dare bet you'll get bids of £150 and asking for warranty.

familycourtq · 30/09/2019 12:07

Yes.

Ok, thanks for the input. Not sure why you think it's poorly built but I am sure you must know a lot more about cars than I do.

how many pics of it have you taken? the more the better
what's the service history like? if it's a great service history, shout about it! when was the last service?
sell the extras on it (if it has any)
comment on the bodywork - if it's got hardly any marks - state this
how new are the tyres? if loads of tread left - state this

familycourtq · 30/09/2019 12:11

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I think for a nearly 20 year old, one litre car - £500 is about right tbh.

People will typically want something a bit newer, with a bit more "oomph" and things like Bluetooth, aux input, electric windows, air con etc.

Does the car have anything like that or is it really pretty basic?

TimetohittheroadJack · 30/09/2019 12:17

Have you tried webuyanycar, or similar websites?

familycourtq · 30/09/2019 12:18

Hmmmm it doesn't but we have a DAB radio that has some of that we could probably fit in it.

I was hoping that being a viable economical petrol car might count in it's favour.

WBAC says they will give us £340 but online reviews suggest they'll chip that down more if we take it there.

And charge you an admin fee.

TimetohittheroadJack · 30/09/2019 12:41

If you google there are other companies that will not try and negotiate with you - they just send a driver to pick it up. I think the one we went with was sellyourcar Scotland.

andyoldlabour · 30/09/2019 12:52

Just had a look on Autotrader and £500 seems to be about right.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 30/09/2019 12:52

Isn't the road tax £200 a year? If it is the car is effectively without value as the tax makes up too much of the real value which is about £400 with a recent set of tyres

Butchyrestingface · 30/09/2019 12:58

Do you mean Instagram? Shock

TinyMystery · 30/09/2019 13:02

Where do you live? If coastal, I’d be wary of a car that age due to corrosion.

pandaeyez · 30/09/2019 13:06

Without sounding rude, I think it's probably the price.

I sold my 2008 corsa last year and only sold it for £500 so I think you may need to reduce the price. Unfortunately Corsa's aren't worth very much.

Good luck!

SmileyGiraffe · 30/09/2019 13:07

I think it's poorly built because I've spent most of the last decade in the motor trade.

Vauxhalls are built to a budget and sold to the same budget.

WBAC staff are on commission to knock the quote down. They over price the car to get you in and then rip the car to bits. They're owned by British Car Auctions and are a method to get stock to go through said auctions. If they're offering £240, you'll get no more than £250. When we offer a part-exchange value and someone says WBAC have offered more, the response is always, "Go and see them and fingers crossed you get it". More than half come back saying that they'd ended up offering less than we had.

Span1elsRock · 30/09/2019 13:11

We sold DDs car for good money. DH spent a whole Sunday cleaning the outside while DD did the inside and we took the car down to a local beauty spot in good daylight to take lots of photos.

We were honest in the blurb, put "no offers/dealers please" and also photographed the MOT (blocking out reg no). We also had the full service history from previous owner that helped.

Yes. I had to Google it to get the meaning.

Not rudeness at all - I was asking for advice and I am not about to get all precious about the value of DD’s car. I appreciate everyone’s input.

OP posts:
italianfiat · 30/09/2019 13:43

Have you any paperwork to back up the mileage?

Without strong evidence I would question such low mileage on an ancient car like that. If my nana had owned it, it could be genuine at 68000, if it were me, I do about 18k miles a year, no way.

It's possibly worth the £500 to the right buyer, but realistically people looking for a cheap run around for £500 will have the choice of many better cars.
