to want my neighbours to quieten down their parrot?

My neighbours have a pet parrot (or some other large bird in a cage). Their back door is pretty much constantly open. Through the day, whether I'm in or out, it's fine, annoying, but I've always put up with it. However right now the bird is singing to itself and it has been for around an hour. It's woken my 5yo twice, he has school tomorrow and I have lectures all day so we have to be up and about early. AIBU to report it? How do I go about this? I can report to council but it seems like that's if there's a constant issue which there usually isn't, in fact in the 3 years I've lived here I've never heard it go on for this long this late. Can I call 101? Would they do anything? I feel like a dick but I can't sleep because of it and it's really loud! AIBU to be annoyed and want it to shut up

Well we are home for the evening and Polly is not singing so maybe it was a one off. I do hope so! As to why I'd report it rather than go round and tell them so late at night - I already mentioned I'm a young single mother and that they're two middle aged people who could potentially make my living here hell should they see fit. They haven't been friendly or unfriendly whilst I've lived here so I've no clue whether they would take kindly to me knocking on their door and asking them to shush and to be honest, at 11pm or later any noise from pets is unreasonable and they should be aware of that? During the day I would not complain.

But they might be perfectly ordinary people who have no idea that the bird is bothering their neighbours and might actually be nice and maybe make an effort to help. Whether that be a cover or put to bed in another room... Or whatever.

Not all neighbours are nutcases, some are quite pleasant. Go during the day whether the parrot is making a noise or not.

gamerchick · 30/09/2019 19:20

Sometimes people are just accustomed to their own noise and can tune shit like that out. It happens.

NetballHoop · 30/09/2019 19:25

Not any help to the OP but...
My sister lived in a flat a few years ago that looked out onto a small square where people walked their dogs and primary school kids would troop through twice a day.
The flat opposite hers had a parrot that had learned to bark, play mobile ringtones and imitate the loud noise primary school kids make when playing together and would do it ALL day long.
It was funny the first time I heard it, but she moved as soon as she could.

Silverchime if you alter your name to Longjohnsilver maybe you could offer up some pieces of 8 to buy Polly?

Don't think anyone noticed this piece of MN gold so had to highlight it Grin

Also the parrot being taught to say "drop yer pants"! Class! Wish i could have a parrot

Helpful Getoverit
Sympathies OP, that must be awful. I hate bastard birds I'd be anxious too but it really won't hurt to go round tomorrow and have a polite word - you're sure they're not aware but their parrot is disturbing you and DC. Most people would appreciate that if their pet is bothering anyone that their neighbour said something nicely instead of going straight to the council or being aggressive. They might be mortified. If they get arsey you can walk away and then consider further action. Good luck.

I wonder if birds squawking int he trees annoy the Op ... we have hundreds of birds here where I live magpies, crows, ducks etc. I just ignore them and carry on.

myself2020 · 01/10/2019 06:20

@JoObrien7 i do live birds - but: a parrots noise is vastly different from any local birds make. both the volume (a lot louder) and the repetitiveness of learned sounds like car alarms etc is absolutely horrendous.
As much as i love them, they can be absolutely unbearable

MidniteScribbler · 01/10/2019 06:38

Parrots do not belong in residential areas. Their sound is far beyond native birds.

Bringonspring · 01/10/2019 11:18

Parrot noise is not comparable to local birds who live in trees and not in cages

Vilanelle · 01/10/2019 11:21

Do you live on my street OP? We have the same problem. Neighbour keeps the cage in the garden on dry days and he is a noisy bugger.

As well as that, our neighbour has his granddaughters dog quite often and I can't go in my garden without him constantly barking at me through the fence. The neighbour shouts the dogs name and guess what, the parrot now shouts the dogs name. It's a bloody nightmare

CharlotteMacaw1 · 02/10/2019 00:10

I have a macaw parrot. She can be loud at times when she throws a fit or the small dogs barking can set her off also and I try to stop it fast because she IS very loud. Our houses around here are very close. She does go to bed between 8-9 PM as the sun goes down. She gets covered and is quiet for the rest of the night. I would talk to your neighbors first to see if something can be settled that way. Good luck.

I'm in a flat and a neighbour has a parrot they very often have their ground floor door open in the summer and the parrot repeatedly makes the same blipping noise that smoke alarms do when their batteries are going flat. It can be very annoying, especially when you just want to sit peacefully bin the garden or you are trying to concentrate on work in the flat. I think the owners are so used to it they don't realise how much it impacts others.

Just imagine if you lived in Australia, they are flying all over the place lol
