To wonder if menstrual cups really work?

Just that really.
The idea sounds great - no more forking out loads of money on tampons / pads etc but...
Do they actually work? No leaking?
It sounds really messy tbh even just to empty them! 🙈

Mine stopped me weeing so became a nightmare so I gave up with it. And yer I dunno if I was doing it right but always seemed to get blood on my fingers

SalamanderOnHoliday · 29/09/2019 21:49

Yep, find the right one for you. Saved me hundreds and wished I’d started using one sooner. And brilliant when travelling. Took s couple of gos to get the knack....but so did tampons. So much less messy.

Ohyesiam · 29/09/2019 21:50

Mine does.

PancakeAndKeith · 29/09/2019 21:51

I will confess that mine leaks but I use washable towels so I still don’t spend anything.

Ffsnosexallowed · 29/09/2019 21:51

I started using one about 4 months ago. Love it. I have v heavy periods, so even with a large one I need to empty it every couple of hours. No more messy than changing a tampon. Benefits, don't have to carry tampons, environmentally much more friendly, not drying like tampons are. I don't get blood on my fingers emptying it.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 29/09/2019 21:52

Absolutely. I tried a couple before finding the right one but it was incredible once I worked it out. No tampons, no soreness from the tampons, no bulky pads feeling like nappies, just easier periods.

The absolute winner for me, though, was that my periods were always ridiculously heavy and I'd be changing tampons hourly, while with a cup I could go at least 3 hours even on the heaviest days. The difference that makes when you're working, walking the dog, going for a run and generally 'living' is indescribable.

Newmum102 · 29/09/2019 21:52

I love mines. Never had any issues with it. Took a few goes at getting used to it, vhf get in fine now. Wish I got one sooner.

Craftycorvid · 29/09/2019 21:52

Took some getting used to but I liked mine.

Verily1 · 29/09/2019 21:52

They have pros and cons like everything else but are so much better than the alternative for 99% of women!

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2019 21:53

Mine has leaked. but I have had to fish it out of the toilet bowl a couple of times after a vigorous poo Blush

berringer · 29/09/2019 21:53

They totally work for me. I’ve been using a moon cup for over 20 years. On the odd occasional I over the years when i’ve forgotten my and had to use san pro I can’t believe how smelly, messy and uncomfortable it is. There’s no comparison.

Like all new things it takes a little getting used to and a bit of practise, which obviously varies from person to person and of course it doesn’t suit absolutely everyone.

Mrsboombastic99 · 29/09/2019 21:53

I got an 'organicup' about a year ago. It took a couple of goes to get used to it and I trimmed the stem to make it more comfortable. But I honestly love mine. I find tampons really uncomfortable but I can't feel the cup at all.

Kolo · 29/09/2019 21:53

I’m a convert. I love them. Cheap (in long term), never run out, no waste, no leaks, no smell, comfortable, less changing, less drying than tampons, very secure.

The only downside was the emptying, it was strange at first. It took me a while to get round emptying it in public toilets (where the sink was outside the toilet cubicle). The advice I’d read was to use tissue to wipe it, but I’ve found taking a bottle of water with me is better.

Batqueen · 29/09/2019 21:54

I love mine! On heavy days I might also use a pad too for security like I would with tampons but leaks are rare. It holds quite a lot so I try and only empty it at home.

RavenLG · 29/09/2019 21:54

Mine is brilliant. I could never get on with pads they would end up a crumpled mess in an hour. Tampons would make me dry and sore. No leaks with the cup, changing can be messy but because I can go 12 hours without changing I’ve never needed to change it anywhere other than my own bathroom. I no longer feel awkward and uncomfortable during my period. I don’t have a particularly heavy period for what it’s worth.

Swer987 · 29/09/2019 21:55

I cant get on with it. I find it leaks alot. I spoke to the company who makes it and they were helpful in giving me tips, but in the end suggested it just wont work for me.

MrsTJOsbornee · 29/09/2019 21:55

Love mine. I got a saalt cup. Was a bit sceptical at first but definitely wished I'd made the change sooner.

Yubaba · 29/09/2019 21:55

I’ve used one for 10 years, it very rarely leaks, usually only if I put it in wrong.
It can be messy putting it in and out but I just wash my hands afterwards.

IAmMyOwnPerson · 29/09/2019 21:55

This is all actually a lot more positive than I was expecting!
I think I'll give it a try then!
I have a really physical job so I'm still a bit nervous about it leaking though! 😮

I use the organicup and it has never leaked. My periods are quite light so normally just empty it every 12 hours, and not having a slightly wet tampon string after a wee is amazing! It is so comfortable that I worry I'll forget I've got it in! Smile

Kolo · 29/09/2019 21:59

Like PP have said, cups are a game changer for women with heavy periods. Since having kids I’ve suffered with menorrhagia and it was so uncomfortable and prevented me from doing stuff on my period. The mooncup changed that.

SunnivaGunne · 29/09/2019 22:02

I have used a Moon cup for 12 years and it is the best thing ever. It can be messy to deal with but you get used to it and the minimal pollution aspect makes it worth the effort. I use panty liners on day one and two just in case but nothing like I'd need if I didn't have a cup. I think they are amazing. No need to have extra sanitary products with you but you do need a sink and hand washing facilities.

linoleum · 29/09/2019 22:03

Love mine, would never go back to pads and tampons. Great advice on precious stars website (sorry no idea how to do links)

GlamGiraffe · 29/09/2019 22:05

Absolutely brilliant. My mooncup. I love it. It's far more comfortable than tampons or pads, has only leaked if I've put it in wrong, can go longer between emptying than tampons need to be changed, takes no space to store, and is really comfy. I'd never go back now. I initially followed the box instructions and found the suggested size didn't work at all, which was rather unpleasant, I spoke to the company who took into account more factors when deciding if/ which cup you have, you could always call them first for advice if unsure, they were extremely helpful. I've seen lots of charts online to help you select your best option too.

Lovestonap · 29/09/2019 22:05

Get yourself a menstrual cup and a set of washable towels and you're away. I bought mine over 5 years ago and haven't looked back.
