To ask how the heck to choose radiators? Urgently!

Need to choose and purchase radiators tonight.

Currently renovating one bedroom in a Victorian terraced house; modernising somewhat (wooden flooring, fresh paint, "sleigh" style white baby furniture), but not making it super trendy. Suddenly realised the radiators will probably need to be the same in every room once we get round to the rest... Feels like a big decision!

If I had the money to redo my radiators in my Victorian terrace I'd go for narrow vertical ones that take up less wall space. There are some lovely ones on the market.

I love the vertical ones too - they take up less wall space and look fab.
I have a vertical one in my kitchen but with normal horizontal ones in the rest of the house - so they don't have to all be the same if you don't want too.

We’ve recently done up our entire house and I love our radiators. If you take a look on the best heating website there is a range called Milano Windsor - we got the anthracite colour but they come in other colour options. They are fab as you can get vertical or normal horizontal ones so we’ve gone for different styles depending on the room but they all match as they’re all the same range. We hAve 2 verticals in the living room as they take up less wall space and in the bedrooms we’ve gone for the normal horizontal ones. Hope that helps.

Work out the BTUs you need for the room then look what's available in radiators that provide that output?.
I've a lovely cast iron radiator in my hallway. Gets super hot even with a thermostat, realistically too big for most other rooms. I have plain flat panel white radistors elsewhere as they are relatively invisible. I know someone who has very small low level cast iron rads which you can have in a variety of sizes, in white which are nice. The only thing is they impinge into the room space a bit. Like my hall radiator they get, and stay very hot.
If you're thinking of vertical radiators, just consider placement (with potential future children)- A friend found hers were all instantly considered as ladders by her children!

Goostacean · 29/09/2019 20:25

Can't do vertical as it's an attic room so the walls are sloping... or would slope above the radiator sideways and look odd I think. Got a vertical one elsewhere and love it so will definitely consider that for other rooms!

Have a look for column radiators. They are much more efficient than the generic ones.

Also, especially great along outside walls.

Make sure you do a proper BTU calculation for each room / location so the radiators are up to the job. That will define some of the size options.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 29/09/2019 20:33

Do take note of what Giraffe is saying. It's not just an aesthetic question. In fact it's not even primarily an aesthetic question. The things are meant to be functional and heat your house up evenly. If you get one which is underpowered for the room it will be chilly. Overpowered ones are going to be wasteful. Calculations have to be done!

I agree with the calculations, also though I put the odd cast iron one in my renovated house and they are very beautiful. We turned the temp down with a water flow valve I think.

40andfeelingit · 29/09/2019 21:06

We’ve got modern versions of the old style radiators and they’re ace, look beautiful and get v hot!
Take a look at Trade Radiators column ones, they’re really helpful if you have to ring them with queries about BTU etc, great service, quick delivery and best price we found

Goostacean · 29/09/2019 21:17

Yep, have done my BTU calculations! Using multiple online calculators to make sure I wasn't relying on one site

Many thanks ton@Cliffordthebigreddog because we now have two Milano Windsor radiators on the way! Which, having looked around the house more carefully, will match the other ones we've got- we only had a different style in that particular room, it seems. Perfect! Thanks MN, always to the rescue on time Grin

Ahh that’s brilliant @Goostacean glad I was able to help! They are gorgeous radiators!! Smile

PinkOboe · 30/09/2019 09:46

column ones are an absolute bitch to clean

thenewname · 30/09/2019 09:58

Love the Milano ones, have pinned!

Goostacean · 30/09/2019 11:17

I'm sad I couldn't make vertical ones work in the room, but will try to work them into the other rooms- that have normal vertical walls!

Last step now is to get flooring sorted, but I had another thread about that ages ago so will have to dig out those recommendations...
