AIBU about our oven..

So just looking for a bit of advice..

Currently renting a 3 bedroom house with my DP and our oven is terrible, it takes forever to get hot or cook something but it does the job.
The other day we decided to bake a cake and it ended up black on top and not even completely cooked! (Bye I've made this cake hundreds of times and this has never happened)

This was kind of the last straw for my DP and was quite pissed off (probably because he was annoyed at not having any lemon drizzle) but has said I need to text the landlord and tell them we need a new oven.
I did say it was pointless and wasn't going to bother as the oven does work just not to the standard we would like or have been used to in previous homes.

So my question is AIBU saying no? My DP says we might as well ask, but why ask a question you know what the answer is going to be.

I don't wanna text my landlord asking this if they are going to laugh in my face Hmm

Husband can message landlord, surely? It does sound like a rubbish oven and you ARE entitled to one that works properly, but you don't have to be the one doing all the negotiating just because you do the baking, right?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/09/2019 18:39

If you do ask, the worst that can happen, really, is that they say no, and if you're lucky there might be a working oven in it for you.
So I don't think you've lost anything if you ask.

And if you don't ask you certainly won't get a working oven.

LIZS · 29/09/2019 18:42

Just tell ll it is not working properly. It might just be a part like fan or element needing replacing.

Frouby · 29/09/2019 18:45

I would spend a couple of quid on an oven thermometer so you can see what temp the oven is getting to, then if it's not performing as it should you can phone landlord and tell him it's not working because it doesn't get hotter than 170 or it runs at 220 no matter what the setting is or whatever it's doing.

All ovens run slightly differently, sometimes they take a bit of getting used to and sometimes they are just rubbish and need repair or replace but at least you will know.

Do you rent direct,, or does LL have an agent? If agent, report to the agent, more likely to get a result. If LL, report as not working properly and request repair or replacement. Will probably cost more to repair, so you might end up with a replacement.

If the cake was black on top and otherwise uncooked...was it on the grill setting?

gamerchick · 29/09/2019 23:08

Why do you have to do it?

greenflamingo · 29/09/2019 23:09

I got an oven repairer out in similar circs only to find out I’d been using the grill. Check the manual! But if not, definitely notify landlord.

WarshipWarrior · 29/09/2019 23:10

Is it an oven without a fan and you're used to a fan oven?if so YANBU but personally I'd replace it myself, keep the old one in the garage then swap them back if u move out should the landlord say no. He is not being unreasonable to ask though - you dont ask you dont get. Plus you can get a decent single fan oven for about £100 so the landlord might be kind 😁

Krieger my DH has done that !
