How work homework in Y7

user49er · 29/09/2019 17:21

My DS is currently getting 7/8 pieces of homework a week, approx 30 mins each - but obviously sometimes taking longer... AIBU to think this is far too much for year 7? It's taking over our lives and the daily cajoling/encouraging is getting pretty stressful already.... What's the average..?

That should read how much homework obviously!

My dd gets 3/5 a week so far. But the head did say they've cut back this year.
7 or 8 is one per subject per week which is not uncommon I don't think. :(

Smileyaxolotl1 · 29/09/2019 17:25

That seems quite low tbh - that’s less than 1 homework per subject. At most schools it around 1 hour a night at that age.
Sorry! I’m not a big fan of homework either...

Bishbosh84 · 29/09/2019 17:25

YANBU. I told my kids not to ever bother doing their homework and it never did them any harm

They'd be permanently in detention at most schools in Year 7.

It’s bit so much the number of lives as how long they take. Does he have a homework timetable? Dd has one which sets out the homework for each night with a time limit - it varies from 50 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes (in theory) though in practice she prefers to do it in a large block at the weekend and have more time on weekday nights for activities.

simplyredfan · 29/09/2019 17:28

My DD is in year 8. She had very similar amount to your son in year 7 and sometimes more.

It is still early days for your son and my DD did find it difficult, but she did adjust and is now able to manage the amount. She does most of her homework as soon as she gets in from school. So it isn't all stored up for the weekend.

She sometimes attends homework club at school if she needs support with a certain subject.

formerbabe · 29/09/2019 17:29

Sounds like a normal amount...my ds (year 7) gets an hour per night.

mamaoffourdc · 29/09/2019 17:30

Sounds low/normal

SquirellTamer · 29/09/2019 17:30

My DD gets 11-12 pieces of homework per week, each piece takes approx 30 minutes. It is taking some getting used to.

formerbabe · 29/09/2019 17:32

I don't express this view to my dc but I absolutely hate homework...it really causes unnecessary disharmony and infringes on family time. My ds is exhausted from school and I'd prefer him to spend his evenings relaxing.

andi76 · 29/09/2019 17:34

She's supposed to have 3 pieces per day, 20 minutes per piece (we're supposed to contact school if it's taking substantially longer).

Until half term though, they're only getting 2 per night.

seaweedandmarchingbands · 29/09/2019 17:37

Less than an hour a night on average? I think it’s pretty reasonable, sorry. Some nights they could have off and do two or three over a weekend?

I don’t get the antipathy to homework generally. As long as it is good quality work, it’s all helping with learning, which is what being an 11 year old should (roughly equally with exercise and spending time with family and friends) be about.

Starlight456 · 29/09/2019 17:41

My Ds hardly got any year 7. I would say though . Does your school have a hw club . Tell her if she continues not to do it she needs to go to hw club.

I have found with my Ds he is far better have a break and something to eat before hw.

I would also if she refuses let her get a detention . That might focus her mind

user49er · 29/09/2019 17:49

Thanks everyone- it sounds normal then Confused? It is taking a lot to get used to as his primary have more or less done away with compulsory homework... I've just counted it's actually 8 or 9 per week I forgot science! Art and tech are not weekly...
it's not so much the "actual" homework that's the problem... it's planning it, reminding about it, getting himself set up, finding his pens, getting a drink, asking for help etc etc etc.... it just feels like it's taken all day today.... school does have homework club but he's shy and doesn't know how it works so doesn't want to go 🙄.. gaahhhhhh!!!!

Hopefully it will get easier when you get into a rhythm. One piece an evenibg during the week and more on a Sunday morning?

gingerbiscuits · 29/09/2019 21:37

Sounds pretty standard to be honest- my son has just gone into yr8 & his yr7 homework took a bit of getting used to but you just need to help them accept it & work out how to manage it because it's not going anywhere anytime soon, believe me!!

Rockbird · 29/09/2019 21:43

DD1's school don't give them homework in the first half term of yr 7. She's finding school very stressful, I can't imagine how she's going to cope with so much homework.

user49er · 29/09/2019 23:37

That's what I was hoping Rockbird... I did expect plenty of homework but thought they might have eased them in gently.. he's only been there a month !
