To not understand easyJet's obsession with putting hand luggage in the hold.

Something that's been puzzling me for a while is what is easyJet's (and possibly other airlines?) obsession with trying to put cabin bags in the hold?

Last few flights I've been on, they've cited not enough space in the cabin, fair enough, even though we were probably half way down the queue, so not even the last to board.

Last weekend when we flew, we booked seats up front / speedy boarding and were one of the first 20 to board, and they were saying to leave bags by the steps to go into the hold. Yet there was plenty of space on the overhead lockers.

Then yesterday, we are at airport and the app was giving me notifications encouraging me to do a bag drop and "go hands free"!

I don't get it!

After all these years of being encouraged to travel light, I've gone from being that person with the heavy label stuck on my huge case that's going in the hold, to being able to holiday for a week with just a cabin bag and I've enjoyed the freedom of not having to wait at baggage reclaim.

Yet, they now seem intent to to back to the 'old ways'.

Anyone here work for easyJet that can enlighten me? Other opinions obviously most welcome. 😁

“How do you get all your cosmetics / liquids in your hand luggage without the officials at the scanning desk removing them?”

You use the small travel versions, decant into 100ml travel bottles, or buy shampoo etc airside or when you arrive in your holiday place.

Not everyone wears and uses lots of make up and toiletries. I don't.
For a week's break, hand luggage only, I take a travel size pot of face cream, a small tinted moisturiser, a small mascara and lipstick, a travel deodorant, travel perfume, a small tube of toothpaste. If in a hotel I will already have toiletries provided. If not I can buy them either when there or when through bag check.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/09/2019 12:47

Because everyone takes those pull along cases and there’s not enough room for 230 of them all (plus coats etc). 30 years ago we somehow all managed with a satchel sized bag.

MrsSpenserGregson · 28/09/2019 12:48

Mind. Blown.

I thought it was a limit of 100ml in total in hand luggage. Am I a stupid twit who's got it wrong all these years?!!

Straycatstrut · 28/09/2019 12:48

Did you see the video where the plane was on fire and people were literally blocking the exists by standing in the aisles trying to get their stuff out of the over head compartments? Maybe something to do with that....

The passengers loading is faster and it’s safer when the luggage is in the hold.

NameChangedForTheDay · 28/09/2019 13:01

@Mummyoflittledragon what a strange comment. Someone asked why I don't like having my case in the hold and that was one of my reasons.

I wasn't aware we were playing Top Trumps.

As soon as they started charging for hold bags everyone went for cabin bags. Span1elsRock feel your pain!

What happened to loading people from the back ? Get them or the window seats sat first so you don’t have to stand in the doorway for 15 minutes waiting for people in rows 7 ,10 and 11 to stop faffing.

And why put kids on first? They just get bored when they have been sat for 30 minutes in a cramped space waiting for everyone and the gap before take off.

I’d put people sat in the back on first. I’d charge anyone using lockers but bags under the seat would be free. Hold bags free.

Yes!

AllTheGrrrrsAreTaken · 28/09/2019 13:05

My only issue with it is that lithium batteries (e.g. laptops mobile phones) are not allowed in the hold as they are a fire hazard/general safety issue and the crew NEVER mentions that to passengers. It is really fucking dangerous and goes against IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations 2018. If you had them in your hold luggage, you would be called up to take it out, it is simply illegal.

It makes me very uneasy but as all airlines are offering this now, I'll have to live with it. I have, however, reported airlines for it before and would encourage everyone else to do it too.

Leflic · 28/09/2019 13:05

There is so little in the Easyjet holds ( and the walk from the gate so long) that bags are normally out before you these days.

I always volunteer my cabin bag as you get priority boarding.

LolaSmiles · 28/09/2019 13:07

Certainly what I've noticed is that what some people manage to push through as a small case isn't a small case at all so there's not enough space.
I'd happily see airlines get tape measures out and anything over the size gets charged at the airport to go in the hold. That way those of us with genuinely cabin sized luggage can have a better chance of it fitting in the cabin

It's like when the airline says you have to have ONE cabin bag and people think that means one wheelie suitcase AND a handbag/laptop bag. No "one bag" means ONE bag (if other airlines allow both then great, but this airline says ONE). I like being at airports where they make people who ignore this put their handbag in their suitcase or charge them to put it under.

People who take liberties make it a pain for the rest of us.

AravisTarkheena · 28/09/2019 13:07

I hate this because the point of hand luggage for me is that I can get off the plane without waiting at baggage reclaim. I HATE baggage reclaim. I am a super efficient packer and take on a small soft bag that can shove in - I can’t blame people for pushing it with wheeled suitcases etc and I appreciate the airlines make it difficult - but some people are daft when it comes to putting stuff in overhead lockers, taking up the whole locker with bags coats and handbags places side by side is a particularly irritating move.

Aragog · 28/09/2019 13:09

I thought it was a limit of 100ml in total in hand luggage. Am I a stupid twit who's got it wrong all these years?!!

Each bottle must be under 100ml.
Many airlines do have a restriction above that - some say up to 10 individual 100ml containers and some say it must all fit inside just 1 of the airline plastic bags.

NicolaStart · 28/09/2019 13:09

“I thought it was a limit of 100ml in total in hand luggage. Am I a stupid twit who's got it wrong all these years?!!”

Couldn’t possibly comment GrinGrinGrin

(You can take up to 10 small items and they all have to fit inside one clear re-sealable bag up to a certain size.... all easily googleable Wink

NicolaStart · 28/09/2019 13:11

It’s not an airline thing, it’s a government thing. The law doesn’t vary, though different airport security operations may be more or less lenient in the way they enforce it.

Honeyroar · 28/09/2019 13:11

It's much quicker and easier to persuade people to put baggage in the hold at the door than once they're on the aircraft. I'm cabin crew and it's a amazing how many people expect to have a whole locker each immediately above their seat per couple with room for two large wheelies and their coat folded up inbetween them. They also expect crews to magically close lockers when their bags are sticking out and the locker is way too full. Then they all go silent when you ask "whose bag is this?" I hate trying to do a giant jenga style organisation of bags during boarding, it's my least favourite part of the flight! (and my airline doesnt change for bags). After 9/11 all hand baggage was banned for a few days/weeks apart from a handbag sized clear plastic carrier bag per person. It made boarding utter bliss!

Lindylu123 · 28/09/2019 13:15

That's exactly what I was going to say any wonder there's no room in overhead lockers when people put handbags and duty free etc up there.. On my recent flight I refused to let my bag go to hold as had to race to get my bus transfer I started pointing out peoples duty free and handbags they made them put this under their seats ended up making room for several passengers hand luggage

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/09/2019 13:15

it's bloody brilliant that they do! So all the cheapskate travellers who squash 23 kg into a little suitcase don't take up all the overhead locker space.
This summer I flew with BA and Brussels airlines and they do it as well

Aragog · 28/09/2019 13:15

My only issue with it is that lithium batteries (e.g. laptops mobile phones) are not allowed in the hold as they are a fire hazard/general safety issue and the crew NEVER mentions that to passengers.

It is on the card check in, etc. about lithium batteries. It is only for spare batteries that can't go in hold luggage. Ones inside something like a camera or phone are fine so long as the device is turned off. However I have never been asked about this when I have been asked to give up my bag at the gate/getting onto the plane.

No "one bag" means ONE bag

Yes, if it says one bag passengers should be made to adhere to that when getting on the plane really. In those cases I just have the stuff I need/want for the journey in a small wallet/bag inside the top of my carry on, and remove it when sat down.

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/09/2019 13:17

Why shouldn't I put my bag in the overhead when I've paid the same ticket price as everyone else AND paid for a hold suitcase?
I've seen yobby passengers take other people's stuff out of the lockers before now to get their own stuff in. Cheeky fucking cheapskates.

LolaSmiles · 28/09/2019 13:18

aragog
Chancers really get on my last nerve.

They also make it harder for everyone.

But airports and airlines need to stop waving them through.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 28/09/2019 13:19

I've been worrying about this. What are the chances of them putting a small rucksack (which is also my handbag) into the hold, do you think? I haven't flown Easyjet for ages!

If it really is a small rucksack, you should be able, like me, to get it under the seat in front of yours, so no problem about needing space in the overhead locker.

TooManyPaws · 28/09/2019 13:21

It's also easier to have your luggage with you if you are making several tight connections. Being regularly used to bags going missing for hours at Heathrow when in transit, I was extremely pleasantly surprised when Munich Airport got my baggage on my connecting flight in the half hour between flights and I had to run through the terminal - so unusual! 😁

NoLeopard · 28/09/2019 13:21

There should be a rule of squashy bags only. Those fucking hard shell cases that people can't control getting in and out of the lockers. Concussion waiting to happen. Make the dimensions smaller as well to give normal people the chance of using their own bit of overhead space.
