To think I may have developed an intolerance to alcohol?

I used to be a fairly heavy drinker. In fact, I know I used to drink too much in my 20s and early 30s. Went through a period of time where for a variety of reasons I was basically tee total for a year. A change of job has meant that Friday night drinks are the norm. But 3 glasses of wine after work (admittedly, large, and in fairly quick succession ) have left me feeling rough as hell today, even though I was home and on the sofa by 8:30pm!

This isn’t the first time either. I’m starting to think I shouldn’t / can’t drink at all.

Is it an aging thing do you think? Or something different?

Yours, pathetic lady still under duvet.

I think it's an ageing thinges. Since I hit 50 I can't drink at all.

Bluewavescrashing · 28/09/2019 11:13

Were they large glasses? Just asking as a 250 ml glass x 3 is 750ml and depending on the strength of the wine that could be 12 units.

I drank the equivalent of gin last night and feel pretty rough today. But I had a nice time and I rarely drink these days.

I definitely feel worse after drinking mid 30s than I did age 17. It's normal I think.

PassMeAnotherCoffee · 28/09/2019 11:13

Three large glasses of wine is a bottle. A large glass is 250ml. A bottle is 750ml. Drinking a bottle after work and before 8pm is pretty fast!

Next time start with a 175ml glass, and you're less likely to be so instantly pissed that you think a third glass within two hours is a good plan Wine.

Age really does have an impact on what you can tolerate.

HavelockVetinari · 28/09/2019 11:14

Lack of food, speed of consumption, not enough water. If you'd eaten first, or spaced it out more, or drunk more water you'd be fine (assuming you're used to that amount).

Otherwise, it's true that your tolerance falls when you don't drink regularly - the first glass of wine I had after having DS, I felt really tipsy even though I'd eaten a big dinner.

I'm intolerant to many alcoholic drinks. It's getting steadily worse with age. I now can't drink wine at all - it isn't a drunk thing or a hangover thing, it literally makes my eyes and nose stream, my eyes go puffy and I sneeze. It's the same with some spirits now too and with most lager. Sad times.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 28/09/2019 11:19

Was it red wine?

That stuff even 1 glass is guaranteed to kill me the best day. However white, rose, gin etc I can drink a fair few and have no effects

That's an intolerance

What OP describes is the effects of alcohol on a system that isn't dealing with it well.

I drink a pretty consistent amount, have a pretty reasonable tolerance, but a whole host of reasons effect how bad, or not, I feel the next day. Food and water intake, speed of drinking, general health

SudowoodoVoodoo · 28/09/2019 11:25

Wine makes me go very sniffly too. I don't know if it sulphites or other contaminents from mass production at the cheaper end of the market.

The sugar from too much alcohol sends my digestive system haywire anyway. I don't get on with artificial sweetners either.

I was a bit of a lightweight anyway, but I struggle to drink much to actually earn a hangover for the next day!

BWOB · 28/09/2019 11:32

I cba to drink these days due to the after-effects. Nightsweats, anxiety, dodgy tummy - and the grogginess/being off-kilter lasts a couple of days too now.

I may indulge in a cocktail or two if meeting friends in town (so maybe once every 3 months or so) but that is it.

Blankspace4 · 28/09/2019 11:34

Yes they were large glasses, and 12 units does sound quite shocking, and probably no wonder I feel rough. I feel slightly ashamed I used to be able to drink that, and carry on until much later too, and get up and function the next day.

I get a sniffly nose with some white wines too.

I think I’ll just accept I’m older now and my body has changed (for better or worse, that’s the debate I guess!). Made some tea and toast and ready to tackle the day (slowly). Silly me.

3 large glasses of wine in a session is counted as binge drinking these days isn't it? It's an entire bottle. Maybe slow down for your body's sake, it's not as young as it used to be Wink

If you really want to be able to drink a bottle at a time you need to gradually step up how much alcohol you'e drinking again because your body isn't used to it at the moment. But really, i'd take it easier if I were you.

Blankspace4 · 28/09/2019 11:36

My stomach is off too. Quite painful and getting up for the loo means I didn’t sleep well. Oh, why do we do this to ourselves!

Time to switch to G&T I think or spirit and mixer for after work drinks. Wine is just evil. I saw a bottle in the fridge as I opened to get out the milk and it nearly made me retch Confused

I think the quantity and the speed, on an empty stomach, perfectly explain why you feel rough. It's known as a 'hangover' Grin!

I think if you are able to tolerate that amount of wine that quickly, that is when you have a problem. What you are describing sounds perfectly normal and healthy to me. Healthy, because you presumably won't be especially keen to repeat the experience next week.

Take care, don't try to do too much this morning other than sipping tea... Smile

JumpyLiz · 28/09/2019 11:45

It's a getting older thing.

Our internal organs aren't the fresh, nifty, super efficient powerhouses that they once were Grin

jennymanara · 28/09/2019 11:57

Three large glasses of wine is a bottle and a lot of alcohol. It is not that you are intolerant to alcohol, more that you can now only drink a normal amount of alcohol without having a hangover. Drink less.

BrokenWing · 28/09/2019 11:58

I love wine, but wine doesn't love me anymore. 2 large glasses would be my max now.

I can drink vodka/coke all night but I always ask for cans so I have it as a very tall drink.

Stickybeaksid · 28/09/2019 12:05

I get a rash from drinking certain drinks. That’s an intolerance. What you have is a hangover.

Blankspace4 · 28/09/2019 12:42

You’re right, ladies. It’s a hangover. I’m just shocked I can get a hangover from “so little”, but also in turn shocked that “so little” is so much. Definitely time to reassess my relationship with alcohol I think. You’re right - I won’t be doing the same next week! This is the third or fourth time I’ve felt hungover this month, and I need to grow up!

Just gone for a brisk walk in the cool, fresh air, to pick up some shopping, another cup of tea and a read of The Testaments and I should be ok for the rest of the day. I hate wasting days!
