To think this is just the baby blues

Posting here because the postnatal board is pretty quiet.
I'm 11 days postpartum and I just feel sad. This is my second baby. He's feeding like a dream, sleeping pretty well at night, I can't really complain about him at all, he's a very chill settled baby. But I just feel sad all the time and a bit numb. I'm not crying all the time which is what everything online says the baby blues is like, I just feel a bit disconnected. I'm caring for him fine and am able to sleep, get out of bed in the morning and play with my other child. Anyone who has had postnatal depression, is this how it starts ? Or do you think it's just the baby blues and this will pass.
Thanks

Baby blues for me was earlier, around days 3 & 4, a couple of low days then I was over it. I had it after both DC1 & DC2, then I was fine.

After DC3 I had PND & it was quite different, no crying just a sense of things not being right & feeling very low even though on the surface everything was perfect. It wasn't properly diagnosed until he was 6 months old.

I'd strongly advise a chat with your community midwife, health visitor or GP. If it's PND it's best to get it nipped in the bud as soon as possible. There's help out there so don't be afraid to ask for it. You'll be fine, just get checked out Flowers

Always worth a chat to GP, midwife etc. It might be a phase, especially if you are very tired etc, but better to be safe than sorry.

Have you got some support? Partner, or someone like your mum or sister? Talk to people about how you feel.

I think that sounds like baby blues, it sounds similar to what I experienced with DS1 and I didn't get it until 2 weeks after and it lasted about 5 days or so (but it feels like it's never going to end!). That said you should definitely keep an eye on it and make sure you are taking care of yourself and talk to someone about how you're feeling Thanks

I'm experiencing similar (it's eased off a bit the past week or so but definitely still there); mine's intermittent not constant, but when it catches me it's been really severe, like "if I got in the car and drove off it actually wouldn't make a difference to anyone in the house" etc. Then a few hours later it passes. And the constant miserable feeling that I'm letting my baby down all the time. At my 6 week check the doctor totally ignored it and the HV said "guilt is normal for parents" so in spite of the little leaflet I was given, they don't seem to think this is PND or take it very seriously.

So I'm inclined to say yours sounds like the baby blues but honestly I don't know if I've just had bad advice.

@WhatTiggersDoBest it's so hard to tell isn't it. I definitely don't feel like this constantly and have periods of feeling happy and not overthinking but then the sadness can hit really hard. I'm also really worried that I'm not bonding with my baby as much as I did with my first baby. Such a rollercoaster of emotions.

I didn't have 'baby blues' with my 2nd in that generally low way that you're describing tho i really did with my first...however I had massive guilt issues in both directions when my 2nd baby arrived as my first baby was not quite 2 yrs old when no 2 arrived so she felt pushed out from being mummy's whole world - but also so protective for my new baby being rejected by my toddler. it was really difficult for the first few weeks but then settled down so quickly - it felt like ages at the time but that period really does change so quickly. Now they are as thick as thieves..good luck, I really hope it settles for you x

Just for reference, we had the same feeding well etc so it felt like I couldn't complain...we were good about 3/4 weeks in to it x

@DramaAlpaca
Did you decide to take medication when your were diagnosed with PND ?

Yes, I did. It really helped. I was six months postpartum when diagnosed though, so it had gone on a long time. It's still very early days for you though, OP, so have a chat to your GP & see what they think. It's best to flag these things up early.
