Toddlers in dog baskets!?!!

OK so here's the thing. DD's nursery has new daytime sleeping beds for the little ones. Big baskets they can crawl into. I swear they are dog baskets, my aunt has one just the same. AIBU to be a bit horrified? Surely there are different safety standards for kids and pet sleepers? I haven't said anything so far as DD's nursery were a bit defensive when I asked what they were, and they said they were baby sleepers. WWYD? Help, just feel a bit weirded out by it.

Those beds even look pretty comfortable.

I would share your concerns for the bed you’ve shown. The mattress won’t meet safe sleep guidelines.

Can you email to question it?

Apologies for missing so much, I was distracted before posting.

They probably are dog beds, I went for an interview at a nursery that had actual dog beds, I turned the job down it just didn’t sit well with me personally.

Our nursery has these, they used to have a mixture of cots and "dog beds" although they call them sleep pods. When the nursery was redecorated they got rid of the cots and went solely with the pods. Apparently the babies like them better. My DS certainly liked them although he didn't start sleeping in our dog bed at home. The ones at his nursery were plastic and did look a lot like a dog bed but they were weighted so they didn't tip up when babies crawl in and out. The nursery had a sheet for each baby and would pop in it on the pod's mattress.

The bed is quite big, but I am worried if the mattress is for pets it won't conform to the relevant British standards for suffocation Is that a problem for a (supervised) toddler as opposed to a baby? Genuinely don't know - had mine a long time ago, and you'd be horrified by where they took themselves off to sleep.

They are called dream/sleep coracles. This encourages and supports young children to become more independent whilst they start to develop own sleep routines with the correct coaching from teachers. They provide a smaller more cosy space to sleep similar to the moses basket but on a bigger scale. They are very popular with my children and as a nursery we are probably going to invest in some more. There is nothing to worry about as they are perfectly safe to use.

Woof woof

Dani0604 · 28/09/2019 15:24

This is what I have
www.communityplaythings.co.uk/products/baby-room/sleeping/g961. This is absolutely safe to use with babies and toddlers.

There are wicker ones, with the low side for children too, although I'm always put off by them looking like dog beds [https://www.tts-group.co.uk/wicker-cosy-basket-l120-x-w60-x-h31cm/1002360.html]

BeanBag7 · 28/09/2019 17:04

Wouldn't bother me, as long as they havent been used for dogs beforehand.
I think safe sleep guidelines only apply up to 1 year - loads of toddlers fall asleep on sofas, beanbags, in their high chairs (!) And I haven't heard of anyone questioning safe sleep guidelines over these .

Aprillygirl · 28/09/2019 17:24

Oh that's a bit strange hah. But as long as they don't start putting the little one's snacks and drinks into bowls on the floor and giving them bones to gnaw on I wouldn't be too worried.
