AIBU to ask why I can pick up my carpets in this way?

We moved in 4 weeks ago and it's a lovely house. Built in 2015, one previous owner

It has immaculate cream carpets but I've noticed something weird. They all fit each room perfectly, there's underlay and gripper rod laid down. But I can go to any corner of any room and just lift up the carpet. It just lifts straight off - exactly like someone just popped them all down and walked off

Shouldn't they be secured in by hooking them over the grips and pushing them in right? They've literally been cut to the right size and just popped down

I was alerted to this by a little fraying in a couple of places. They don't budge or move around at all

So do I leave them? Or do I pay a carpet fitter to come and do them properly?

Posted in property but very quiet there!

I would personally put down a tiny bit of spray adhesive (you can get it in Poundland) around the underneath at the edges and push down, easy to secure it with that but I’m no professional and have done my own carpets (fine, mercifully!) as I can’t afford a fitter.
Just a thought if you’d rather save the expense. Otherwise get a fitter in don’t think I’d leave it as is though

Cherrysoup · 27/09/2019 20:33

Bit odd. When I’ve watched carpet fitters laying, they tamp it down and presumably onto the grips with a big tool with a squashy bit on it, tucks carpets in, doesn’t damage wall/skirting.

T1gerEye · 27/09/2019 20:36

Yes that's it! They tamp it with that rubber mallet thing. Here's some pics

Can't see pics but sounds like bad fitting / cut a bit too small?

Idontwanttotalk · 27/09/2019 20:39

Are they synthetic material so harder to fit down than wool?

Cheap thin carpet maybe?

Oldraver · 27/09/2019 20:40

Sounds like they were never fitted properly as they shoud of been stretched and the edge pushed down between the gripper rod and the dge of the wall.

Either that or the seller has for some reason pulled them up at some point

T1gerEye · 27/09/2019 20:40

Yes please Raymond Grin

What does Raymond want? 😂

T1gerEye · 27/09/2019 20:41

Not cheap or thin. They are plush and nice ones. I appreciate pics don't show this though! Rest of house to an exceptional standard so this seems so weird

madcatladyforever · 27/09/2019 20:41

That's very weird. I've fitted my own carpets before because of cost and have always used gripper rods.
A carpet could in theory use a stretching tool and stretch them over gripper rods so you might be OK.

Elodie2019 · 27/09/2019 20:42

He does sound 'legit' doesn't he?!!

Elodie2019 · 27/09/2019 20:45

I would pay a carpet fitter to re-fit them if they're good carpets. Fitters aren't too expensive.

Sorry I was sidetracked by Raymond's amazing offer... Has anyone phoned him?

T1gerEye · 27/09/2019 20:46

Couldn't call him fast enough!

Is the floor underneath floorboard ? Mine are laid this way with a bit of adhesive as the floors are all concrete so the landlord didn't use gripper rods

Elodie2019 · 27/09/2019 20:49

T1gerEye · 27/09/2019 20:52

@LucaFritz yep it's just a regular floor

When professional fitters fitted my carpet, they did it with a spray adhesive. It probably just needs reapplying or something.

janj2301 · 27/09/2019 21:35

Sounds like we had the same fitter. He cut all our carpets too short. They all frayed at the thresholds, don't stay in the grippers and we've had to tack the stair carpet on in places. Gradually replacing as we decorate
