Because he keeps spitting it on the floor! He can hold it in his mouth for quite a long time and then will dribble it down his front or spit it on the carpet/sofa! Especially annoying when it's milk! We tell him off and take the drink away but doesn't seem to be making a difference. I don't want him to get dehydrated but just can't trust him with liquids!

Well no you can’t take water away. Give him water and ignore when he does it. He’s enjoying your reaction.

Offer water. First sign of spitting remove it with a firm ‘No’. He won’t die of dehydration. He’ll be fine.

Soubriquet · 27/09/2019 08:26

Yep

He’s doing it for attention as I’m guessing your telling him off everytime he does it, and then faff around cleaning it up.

He does it, you clean it quietly without looking at him or making eye contact, and go back to what was you doing.

Once he realises it isn’t getting a reaction he will get bored

My 20 m o does this
I totally ignore it and he hates being changed so he will make the connection himself at some point - get wet-get changed
Just clean up milk spills on the carpet straight away otherwise it’ll smell dr Beckmann cleaner is good or 1001

Ijustwanttoretire · 27/09/2019 08:26

Leave him to it - when he has a cold wet tshirt he might change his mind...

Seeline · 27/09/2019 08:30

Only give him water.
If he has milk then he has to sit and drink it somewhere that is easily cleanable eg kitchen, and then hand it back before going off to play.

And yes, don't make a fuss - he is loving the reaction he is getting!

BertieBotts · 27/09/2019 08:31

My 1yo only gets water under close supervision for this reason.

'front or spit it on the carpet/sofa! Especially annoying when it's milk!'

Don't allow him drink in that room 🤷‍♀️

Herja · 27/09/2019 08:40

Mine were given drinks at the table. Mostly because they got tipped everywhere if they didn't. Just move him to somewhere wipe clean for drinks and ignore it. It's probably attention seeking.

gamerchick · 27/09/2019 08:41

I totally agree with the reaction. Only milk on the kitchen and just take away and wipe anything up with no other noise or eye contact.

I remember this and it is highly irritating I agree.

NightIbble · 28/09/2019 08:19

Thank you for your responses I will limit milk to the kitchen and try not to respond when he does it with water. He is a bit furtive about it and I think he might want to play with the water (his favourite thing) but hopefully this will be a short lived phase!
