AIBU to take the pill at age 40? I’ve never taken it, some questions

No more children wanted and we’ve relied on condos which I hate and so does my husband,

I cannot bear the thought of any kind of implant or coil.

My question, am I too old for the mini pill? I m worried the doctor won’t give it to me!

Secondly, can I take it without a break if I don’t want a period?

Thanks for any info as I’m lacking in knowledge.

Mini pill has very few contraindications so you should be fine on it - the common one you have a 12 hour window to take and you take it without a break, lots of women don’t get periods on it.
More effective methods which you don’t have to remember every day include the mirena coil and implant.

Tubal ligation carries risks and is much less effective than coil / implant so I’d be wary.

@purpleolive The pill and HRT are different. Pill is synthetic hormones and HRT natural and smaller doses. Family history is irrelevant to using HRT unless you have the gene for BC.

If my DH refused to get the snip I'd refuse sex! How bloody selfish.
So if you died and your Dcs did or you divorced, , you'd actually make him do something now that would prevent him having another family. How selfish is that?

purpleolive · 27/09/2019 09:56

@JinglingHellsBells if my DH expected me to pump my body full of hormones despite everything I have already put my body through just so he can have sex with me while keeping his options open to have children with another woman in the off chance I died, yes I'd divorce him, and I'd count him as the more selfish one. As I say I'm talking 40+, not 30s. We wouldn't do it now.

Thankfully my husband is not a dick, and would not expect that of me,

Im still always shocked at the amount of women who believe taking the pill is all about preventing pregnancy when it should be a shared responsibility between the man and the woman. While thats true there are also many other reasons why its prescribed.

For years I suffered heavy painful deliberating periods, after switching dr's I finally had 1 who sent me for scans and they discovered I have endometriosis, I was put on the mini pill to help with the painful periods after numerous other medication didnt work, within he first few weeks noticed an improvement in my skin, my temper and the pain had subsided drastically.

Op the only way you'll know is to go and have a chat with your own doctor, all you'll get here is peoples own personal opinions which wont apply to you 100%.

I'm 43 and I've been on a desogestrel mini-pill for seven years. My doctor is happy for me to keep taking it. It's completely stopped my periods which is great news for me as my periods were very painful.

I had some acne when I started taking it although that disappeared completely with a course of over the counter benzoyl peroxide cream. The only other side effect I've had is melasma, which means I have some very slightly dark patches on my forehead - a lot of women get it in pregnancy too. However, my sister was on the same pill as me right up until her late 40s and she had no side effects whatsoever.

You could just get sterilised yourself. Less risk of problems for you than for your DH and no risks associated with hormonal contraceptives. Another option is the coil. By the time it expires you would be infertile so you’d only need to get it once.

@BlueManRiver well it would be no sex for me then. He needs to step up. You’ve done your part. His choice.
