Why do people have to shout

I am currently sat at my local train station and there are two people holding mobile phone conversations hands free (holding their phones and speaking at them) and they are literally shouting. Luckily they are both speaking different foreign languages so I have no idea what is actually being said but why can they not hold the phone to their ear and speak in a normal tone of voice? Two other waiting passengers have picked up their bags and walked to the other end of the platform after giving the shouters scornful looks. AIBU to just not understand why they have to shout into their phones? I would move too but I am sat on one of the only seats due to a sprained ankle so trying to spare myself discomfort.

I’ve no idea when this became a thing. I see people walking along the street with their phone on speaker and holding it in front of their mouths.

Also, some people generally seem completely unaware of their own volume!!!

One of the perils of public transport I’m afraid. It really grinds me too.
Whether it’s hands free or not, people cannot control the volume of their voices when using a mobile phone in public.
IME the worst offenders are those who say they don’t shout - they are the most oblivious.

On the plus side, I must know enough personal information about my fellow commuters by now to take over their lives and bank accounts Not that I would want to 😂

I do this because my phone volume is really low for some reason and I can only hear it when on speaker, I don’t shout though, why does it matter anyway, do you get annoyed with people talking to each other in public or only if they are on the phone?

Why do people do that, they move it to their mouth to shout then back to their ear after shouting

Even my phone 10 years ago didn't need to do this

It's usually people not speaking English, so maybe it's a cultural thing?

I can't say I've ever heard two people having a 'shouty' conversation in public (unless in a very noisy environment). I'm not annoyed, just perplexed why people do it...especially in a fairly quiet environment.
