To wear doc Martens

I'm 37, mum of 3 with a professional job. Would it be ridiculous for me to wear DMs? Mutton dressed as lamb? Tragic or fashionable at any age?!

YABU - mutton dressed as lamb
YANBU - where what you want when you want!

I got bought a bright green pair for my 37th birthday! 😂 Only reason I'm not wearing them right now is I'm still at the bastard bleeding bruised blister buggery stage of them

MsJaneAusten · 27/09/2019 07:28

I have a pair. I love them as much as I did in the 90s. I’m older than you.

And, tis better than mutton dressed as mutton is my new favourite phrase. I’m going to use it every time I look in the mirror and question if something is ‘too young’ for me.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 27/09/2019 07:28

I wear them, silver, pink, glitter, patent, printed with lovely pictures....and more.

Love them, have worn them for years and Icare not a jot what anyone thinks. I'm 45 now.

Most people comment positively tbh.

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 27/09/2019 07:46

I brought my mum a pair for Xmas n she's nearly 50!

I’m getting my first pair for my 51st birthday!

Brefugee · 27/09/2019 07:55

also my mum is in her 70s and she bought some of the sandles in summer. Joking with the woman in the shop that they will definitely outlast her!

northerngirl2012 · 27/09/2019 07:56

I live my DMs one pair of boots, one shoes. Wear them from September/October to April!

northerngirl2012 · 27/09/2019 07:57

Love

AMAM8916 · 27/09/2019 10:01

Wear whatever you like! Sod what people think. I personally think DM's are for any age and I've seen plenty of 40 something men and women wearing them and never batted an eyelid.

I know what you mean though, 'is it appropriate' and my answer would be yes totally

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 27/09/2019 10:12

They're just boots (or shoes) so wear what you want. I'm 37, have a lovely cherry red pair, a green pair and a black pair though they are a bit done (got them for 15 quid in a charity shop about 15 years ago) I want to try and bring them back to life cos they were soooo well broken in and comfy.

Mabelface · 27/09/2019 10:22

I'm nearly 50 and that's all I wear. They're so good for your feet (my podiatrist recommends them). I currently have 8 pairs.

Ohhh Brefugee those are gorgeous! I had not seen that colour, I love them.

DMs rule! As do middle aged women embracing their mutton in sequined yet sensible shoes Grin

MoodyBitch · 27/09/2019 12:18

Doc marts are all I've ever worn. I have all manner of styles and colours, both boots and shoes.
Currently wearing a pair of banana yellow ones.
I'm in my fifties. I don't give a hoot what anyone else thinks of my choice of footwear.
Go for it.

ShutupWesley · 27/09/2019 12:21

I couldn't afford them when I was a teenager so you bet your arse I'm wearing them now. Love my Doc Martens

lazylinguist · 27/09/2019 12:21

YANBU. I'm 47 and have never owned a pair of DMs. Bought some (reversible sequin ones Shock) for dd14's birthday and now really fancy some (not sequinned!) for myself. They are bloody expensive though.

MsMustDoBetter · 27/09/2019 12:23

Go for it! They look cool on almost everyone and can go with many different styles.

whyamidoingthis · 27/09/2019 12:38

I couldn't afford them back in the 70's/80's. I got my first pair, which did wear out so they're not as durable as they used to be, when I was in my mid-40's. I have 2 pairs on the go at the moment and I'm in my mid-50's. It never dawned on me they might be inappropriate for my age.

Gotthetshirt23 · 27/09/2019 22:42

Have loads of DM's and worn them since art college .
The newer not made in England are smaller and seem much more plastic.
There was a style called "greasy walking boots" which had a padded surround at the top which I would pay ££££ if they made them again.

Gotthetshirt23 · 27/09/2019 22:43

I also don't give a Grinwhat other people think

Minesril · 29/09/2019 09:43

I love them - so comfy! My red velvet ones especially! They look awesome with a pretty dress.

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 29/09/2019 09:52

Absolutely not.

In the 1980s I used to wear DM shoes (not the boots, but still thick soles) with slightly full floral skirts, and a fitted t shirt. Including at work, with a jacket. I still have them now, and would wear them if I felt like it. There is no rule book about this stuff.

DianaT1969 · 29/09/2019 10:43

For those who didn't know, Solovair is the UK original manufacturer of DMs before production was moved overseas. You can still buy UK made boots direct from Solovair online, at their factory near Northampton, or through outlets such as Toast.

ShinyMe · 29/09/2019 11:09

Well that's odd. I could have sworn I'd already posted on this yesterday, but my posts aren't here.
Was the other thread also you OP?

OhTheRoses · 29/09/2019 11:14

Well I am 58 and even at 22 didn't undedstand why anyone would wear shoes that needed breaking in. Goes for Birkies too. Why jist why wear anything that requires pain.

tierraJ · 29/09/2019 11:20

I wear what I like & im 43. I used to look like lamb dressed as mutton at times so I'm making up for it now haha.
