Ward with KNOWN Norovirus AIBU?

Need a quick answer to this if poss....

My mum is 80 and was admitted to a ward at the weekend with a patient who has norovirus. Only found out when visiting because we had to gown up with gloves/aprons etc. She’s in heart failure and so when I found out about the norovirus I asked if she could be moved. I think if she catches it, it’ll see her off, she’s so weak.

The ward said “no”. Now that she’s been “exposed” those patients who HAVE IT need to be clear of symptoms for at least 48hrs before anyone can move in or out.

I’m furious. They knew the small (8 bedded) ward HAD this virus when they PUT HER IN THERE.

Am I being unreasonable? My mums so frail.... a nasty bug could kill her on top of what she already has.

Up to 6 weeks ago she was driving/self caring/shopping/lunching.

Is the hospital in a town starting with the letter K? If so I also have a relative in there who has caught it.

I had the norovirus once when I was a reasonably fit 40 year old and it was awful, surging temperature, vomiting and terrible headache.Your poor mother shouldn't have been put in that situation.

YANBU that's awful. So sorry. I don't know what else to say but I really hope your mum doesn't catch it.

If she isn’t mobile and isn’t eating then they probably believe it can be managed through hand washing / hygiene. Ask to speak to PALS so they can arrange for you to see the risk assessment

The patient probably didn’t have confirmed norovirus when your mum was admitted, then it was confirmed once she was there hence the rules about not moving her. The precautions are very thorough so hopefully she won’t catch anything

Thanks for the replies. I guess there’s no real way of knowing but it has apparently been on there for over a week. If so, I’m disgusted she was out there. She’d spent 9 hours on a trolley in A&E so, clearly no available beds.
