To tell her essential oils aren’t miracle cures!

I’ve really had it with a friend of mine, every single chance she gets she’s pushing essential oils to be The cure for EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING. No I will not wipe the dogs backside with the stuff to rid him of worms or douse the household in teatree or oregano oil for whatever ailments going round. I understand and accept there are benefits to essential oils and botanical remedies but I’ll scream if I get send another Holland and Barrett sale list of things “I definitely should stock up on”. I’ve always pushed back saying “I’ll just stick to what I know” and accept that’s her choice to use them and is obviously enthusiastic. I’m just so drained after conversations of late, even saying there must be a way to cure lymphoma!

I do feel mean but have nobody to rant to in RL and don’t want to upset her by blowing my top!

Is she trying to sell you them or is she just really into them? It would be annoying to have them pushed on you constantly. I don't get what's in it for her to keep recommending them though?

MrsA2015 · 25/09/2019 14:52

Nope not selling just very enthusiastic about them, starting to get annoying!

Best hope she doesn't get into Young Living, the be-all-and-end-all of essential oils.

MrsA2015 · 25/09/2019 14:57

I don’t even want to know what that is myself!!! Apparently everything can be cured ringworm, tape worm, head lice. Feel very sorry for her DD who is constantly smelling like pot porri (sp?)

I have a friend who sells DoTerra. Yeah, she’s obsessed with them. She even sent some as a present to help a mutual friend through her divorce. Mutual friend was thrilled. I think they’re both bonkers.

doadeer · 25/09/2019 15:03

Haha I know someone like this. Has replaced everything cleaning related in her house, uses th to wash hair and everything! I like a little diffuse myself but thats another level!

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 25/09/2019 15:14

I use essential oils for some things (things like lavender for sleep, tea tree on spots, lavender for some things, eucalyptus for snuffles alongside proper treatments) but not INSTEAD of proper treatments. I'd be ignoring her and pushing back by saying you'll stick to what you know.

Doobigetta · 25/09/2019 15:20

I use essential oils loads, they smell nicer than crappy synthetic perfumes and I’m sure they’re a better solution for colds and sniffles than endless decongestants. But your friend is very foolish to buy them from H&B, she’s paying well over the odds.

JaneJeffer · 25/09/2019 15:23

Use some neroli oil to calm yourself down.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 25/09/2019 15:26

A lot of essential oils are actually quite toxic, especially when heated. I see some fellow candlemakers using some in candles which can be fatal if pets , especially fish, cats and birds are in close proximity. Fragrance oils are formulated to be burned in candles and are much safer

Mumminmum · 25/09/2019 15:33

Tea tree oil is a very powerful allergen. Avoid

Troels · 25/09/2019 15:36

My friend sells DoTerra too. I'm so glad we moved away while she was starting up, her facebook is full of the miracles and she even sent me a present of some.

bonitakitlee · 25/09/2019 15:39

I use these oils as they smell gorgeous, certainly not a cure all. I have a friend who tells me my severe anxiety would be cured if I believed in guardian Angels, it is really hurtful to be told this stuff when you are struggling.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 25/09/2019 15:40

If pregnant, make sure to be very careful around essential oils

MrsA2015 · 25/09/2019 15:54

I’ll admit I’m a slight fan of tea tree for spots as it does seem to work faster than any 78975 step skin cafe routine or spot treatment so I’ll give you that! However the rest is bizarre, her poor dd had worms at one point and she resorted some oil or another on wet wipes, albeit was diluted with the wetwipe moisture I did Ask why doesn’t she just speak to the GP for some treatment. Ah well live and let live I suppose...

Also some essential oils are incredibly toxic to humans when ingested, like tea tree oil. That can be fatal. I used to use it on cold sores then switched to witch hazel after I read that! (Although it cleared up an infected wound I had quite nicely.)

Anyway, some can be useful, some just smell nice. The Unnatural Vegan covered this recently, especially about people ingesting them and making themselves ill. Peppermint oil seems to be safe to ingest but I think of that as an ingredient, not something to drink neat. I use them for minor things, not serious things.

MrsA2015 · 25/09/2019 17:47

Ooh good job you said that about cold sores, I’ve been tempted in the past to use it on my lips as coldsore creams only seemed to make things worse. Currently use l-lysine to keep them at bay which seems to be working!

I have a friend like this too! I wouldn’t mind but my ds was seriously ill in and out of hospital for a couple of winters with his chest and she tutted and said, ‘yes that would never happen to my ds as I rub xxxx oil on his chest’
Yes that’s why my son nearly died because I didn’t douse him in essential oils ffs

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 17:55

They do work on spider infestation 😁
That's about that imho

MrsA2015 · 25/09/2019 18:58

@HenSolo oh my god that’s terrible! Glad your son pulled through, hopefully he has a less frighting winter this year. What an awful thing of her to say.

@IAmALazyArse PLEASE share the remedy, I can see big borris’ in the garden getting ready to invade any day now

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 19:05

@MrsA2015 lemon and peppermint oil. They hate it. A drop in each corner and behind furniture once in 4 days works miracles.
Be prepared though...
When you do it for the first time it will draw them all out from the hiding places into the middle of the room😂

Troels · 25/09/2019 19:19

Jeez LazyArse, I was going to try this till you said it draws them out. I'll just ignore them and pretend they aren't hiding everywhere.
I know certain odors will repell insects and other animals. So this seems like something I'd try.

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 20:04

😁 I prefer to know where, if any, they are.
It was a bit of a mass murder situation in here on the first night...
But since then, not a single one was spotted.
I was thinking about using lavender in the bedrooms, because internet said they don't like that one too. Then I realised they are all over and under lavender plants in the garden, so decided that internet lies...

Tinyandpetite · 25/09/2019 21:46

I have a severe allergy to tea tree oil, I was using it on my acne. I had such a bad reaction- I looked like a had a mix of chicken pox and measles. I was on steroid creams and it took months for my skin to heal, it itched like crazy, and caused very bad scars. Even the body shop tea tree wipes did the same. It was definitely the tea tree. Please be careful with tea tree. It took months to heal my skin
