To think somethings not right about this

So my mum is disabled and wheellchair bound, has carers, has to be hoisted out of bed etc
She is a large lady, used to be a tall slim size 12 before illnesses but once wheelchair bound the weight piled on till at her heaviest she was 28st. OVEr the last ten years she lost weight, at her lowest 21st.

Now, around four months ago she was weighed at hospital, they said she was 24st something. Since then her diets been on and off, lots of hospital appts where she’s got in the habit of eating 2-3 costa cakes and hot choc with the carer who takes her. We also went away on holiday where she did not stop eating...think full English every morning plus 6 slices of toast, lunches out, treats out and three course evening meal. So not the best diet over the last few months.

The management at the home she’s at insisted she get weighed at drs as they were worried about her eating and the maximum hoist weight, so they went last week and weighed her, hoisted her, weighed wheelchair and they said she is 20st! I’m gobsmacked. The carers couldn’t believe it either so they got on scales but their weights were all correct. She also had Bp done which was very low for her, something like 80/50 and bloods done too. Results not bk yet.

AIBU to think somethings really not right here? THats a lot of weight to lose even if you were actively trying hard and exercising, just can’t fathom how an immobile person can lose that amount in such a short time frame. The logical thing would be the scales are wrong but medical scales are calibrated very regularly so I’m not convinced about that either.

She's lost four stone in four months? To be fair when you're very heavy weight can fall off fast if your diet becomes more healthy.

If she's lost 4 stone in 4 months, that's approx. an average of 3.5lbs a week which seems logical for someone of her size, if she's eating less.

makingmiracles · 24/09/2019 19:00

But that’s the thing, she’s not eating considrably less, her diets been full of Costa cakes and hot chocs and cheesecakes and stuff she’s got this carer to buy her! HER hospital appts have averaged 1-2 a week so that’s twice a week they’ve been splurging at Costa.

That’s a normal amount for someone of that size to lose even with a relatively small deficit. I’ve lost 70lbs+ in the last 3 months and I started at 180lbs and it hasn’t been particularly difficult.

Maybe there’s something medically wrong with me then as a few years ago I lost 3.5st over 6 months and I was eating fairly clean and exercising vigorously twice a day, Zumba three times a week and busting a bollock to lose it basically. At the moment I’m only just over a st lighter than her and I’ve been trying really hard over last 6 months, eating well, cut out sugar completely etc and still only lost just over a stone Confused

She's losing muscle mass and bone mass, presumably?
