AIBU to think postpartum hair loss is a serious kick in the teeth

Hi all,

I'm 14 weeks pp. As amazing as my journey into motherhood has been so far it hasn't been without the usual - hyperemisis, heartburn, stretch marks, vaginal tears and so on. However just when I thought things were settling down and I was getting back to normal , now my hair is shedding. Seriously shedding.

I know it's all part of the process but it's getting me really down. I'm trying to keep perspective but I'm so anxious whenever I wash, brush or even touch my hair.

I'm going to ask the GP to check my thyroid and iron levels. Has anyone got any other useful advice? Vitamins/ supplements/ products or anything else that could help me through the worst of it?

Any reassurance would also be appreciated.

Thanks Sad

It is normal but do get your iron levels checked anyway. I ended up with a hugely receding hairline, bald patches and huge handfuls of hair coming out everywhere - I was very anaemic, B12 deficient and needed tablets + injections to sort it. I put off going to my GP for weeks as everything I read told me how normal it was!

This happened to me...... I stopped brushing it and put it up in a messy bun all the time!!!!!!!!!!! That really, really helped.
Good luck and congratulations x

Definitely worth getting your blood checked. Postpartum thyroiditis is far more common than people realise.

I’m in the same hair-loss boat. 15 weeks PP, and whenever I shower it seems like loads comes out, same when I brush it. Good to hear it grows back - I’ve got quite long, thick hair but got it in plaits today and they feel decidedly thinner than before...

It will come back, I had my son 18 months ago and was so upset with losing so much hair. It has grown back and it is thicker than before and I have a funny little fringe of new hair growth!

I went back on the pill which slowed mine down and started to grow back where it had receded at the front. However, I have long hair and it's now about 3 different lengths and looks crap. I know it will even out eventually but it's a long slog.

NoWuckingForries · 19/06/2020 09:05

It's an awful feeling. Mine game out in clumos at 20 weeks and that grew back. tt has much less column and it never grew back the way it was before.
I get a shorter blunt cut every 8 weeks, get highlights and use volumising powder when I go out. I was so upset but ok about it now. I can tel, it's not obvious to other people. I never fully got back on track with the person that "joked" about getting me a hat.

@RebeccaCloud9 really stopping breastfeeding can make you lose hair? I hope not, I am still breastfeeding my son and have no plans to stop anytime soon but I lost a lot of hair from when he was born to a few months old and someone told me breastfeeding makes the hairloss worse

turnthebiglightoff · 19/06/2020 10:20

My hair went really frizzy and flyaway when I stopped breastfeeding and is now prone to curl; I've never had curly hair! It took a couple of treatments but it's now nearly the best it's ever been!! bloody greys though!!
