Nappy bucket liner advice

Frustratingbedtimes · 24/09/2019 12:48

I have borrowed some reusable nappies from our local nappy library, but am due to give them back soon. Although I've bought some nappies, I will need to get a bucket.
I was planning on buying a plastic 16l pedal bin to make it easier to open when handling nappies, however I'd really like to have a waterproof liner that I can throw in the wash with the nappies. I've found a couple of places that sell one but they're about £20, and I'd need to buy two. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
I really don't like having to wash the bucket so the mesh liner doesn't work for me.

I just use a plastic bucket with lid. Swish it with water after emptying and water goes in the toilet. Liners won't mean the bucket won't require cleaning.

I have a Tots Bots twin pack. Very good not waterproof though www.thenappylady.co.uk/nappy-buckets-waterproof-bags/totsbots-mesh-bag-twin-pack.html

Could you not use a pillowcase?

Frustratingbedtimes · 24/09/2019 14:43

I don't see why the bucket would need to be cleaned if the liners were waterproof scittlescatter (at least not very often). However I hadn't thought of emptying it down the toilet (which does kind of solve my issue with it). Thanks
Kittenbittenmitten, I'll go for mesh if I can't find waterproof ones.
Thanks angeldust747 but anything that will get saturated will still mean the bin needs a clean

Mesh is better because you can just chuck it in the machine and everything falls out and if anything gets stuck it still gets washed through the mesh. With a waterproof liner you'd have to fish them out by hand!

Mesh liners also let everything breathe so it gets less stinky in there.

We use an Ikea bin with a waterproof bum genius bag that goes directly in the wash, bin doesn't get dirty and we don't have to touch the nappies/wipes.

LeeMiller · 24/09/2019 14:57

Planetwise do a similar and probably cheaper pail liner.

Also, we get by with just one - it dries fast so it's only really out of action for the duration of the wash cycle, any dirty nappies during that time just go temporarily into a normal wetbag. A cotton wool pad with some essential oils on taped to the inside lid of the bin prevents smelliness.

Home bargains by us is selling old fashioned Nappy buckets.
I had a waterproof nylon wet bag in my nappy bucket, it was a pedal bin and leaked, so I stuck it in the garage (by the washing machine)
I'd get a proper on that you flip the handle over and lock it like the food bins from the council.

jackparlabane · 24/09/2019 15:22

I just used a plastic bucket with a lid. Tip into washing machine with almost no touching needed.

We use zipping PUL fabric bags for the nappies, and flushable liners for the catching the poo. It works often enough to keep doing it. Anyway when the fabric bag gets full (takes a day or at max two) then everything gets washed. We have 3 bags but only 1 is in use. Another is in wash. The third is spare. Whole setup cost a fiver on Amazon.

I used two systems

Dry pailed - my all on one nappies. Literally kept diry ones in large waterproof nappy bag (hung up) and then slung it in wash with nappies. Used fleece liners, flicked solid stuff down toilet and popped into bag. You do have to wash everyday or every other day.

Wet pailing - did with my motherease inserts (covers just went in a nappy bag for washing). Used bucket with mesh liner, rinsed nappy in toilet with jug water (or you can just flush toilet and rinse). Slung into bucket. This way is good if dont have pul covers and you want keep staining to minimum. Every day I'd empty bucket in toilet of excess water that had dripped off. Used theatre oil drops to stop smells and washed twice a week. Lift net out and sling in the wash. I used tots bots

I used Totsbots bucket and liners.

The lid clips on keeps little people out. Can't imagine anything worse than toddler playing with nappy bin Envy

Put extra large wetbag into eBay and you will have lots of options for about £10, most should be big enough for a pedal bin. I can fit about 12-15 nappies in my biggest wet bag which is a good 2-2.5 days worth. Open the zip on the bag as you are shoving it in the machine and job is done.

Deadposhtory · 24/09/2019 17:57

Try eBay. I got an XXL wet bag for a fiver. It's drawstring close and washes brilliantly

stucknoue · 24/09/2019 18:05

I just washed the bin each time (though it was rarely obviously mucky)

nonmerci · 24/09/2019 18:06

I’ve never used a liner and I’ve used reusable nappies with four children now. I just spray the bucket with anti bacterial and rinse it out.

Frustratingbedtimes · 24/09/2019 22:57

Thanks everyone. That's all really helpful. I'll give it some thought and have a look at some of those options.

Pillow case and just rinse out the bin with a swish of water and disinfectant.

Celebelly · 24/09/2019 23:24

I second a wet bag. We have an extra large one we use as an upstairs nappy pail, and when it's ready to be washed I just unzip and chuck it in washing machine, with no need to handle the nappies. It would line a nappy bucket fine too, although we just use the mesh ones for that.

aclothnappymum · 25/09/2019 12:39

I actually ditched the bucket and started using large wet bags for storing nappies. I usually wash the poo off my nappies into the toilet and squeeze water out before placing in the wet bag. I have absolutely NO SMELLS when the bag is zipped. Each bag holds 14 nappies so I know when to put a wash on. The best decision I ever made!
