Aibu to ask if anyone has had the surgery for piles?

Got referred to hospital by my Dr. Dr at hospital assessed me and whilst they are bad and I’ve apparently got pelvic drop, she didn’t want to recommend the surgery as it’s extremely painful, might not hold and it has an extended recovery period which isn’t ideal with a toddler.

So can anyone tell me if it really is that bad.

Can't advise but can I place mark? My mother has Alzheimer's and has severe piles, however her dementia makes her forget she has them and as a result she thinks she's constantly about to poo herself.
This has caused her to prolapse so now an op is our only hope!
Hopefully someone will be along with more constructive advice soon..

I don’t know what it’s like but my grandfather had it and it didn’t help. I’ve got them but also had colon cancer and decided that I was tired of being messed around in that area so I put up with them. Every now and then I get a flare up but I take painkillers and use the ointment. If it helps the best ointment I have found is Anodesyn - sometimes struggle to find it at a chemist so order it online

I've not had it but I've seen plenty as a nurse. It's a bit like the situation post childbirth, a sore bum and that first poo can be a bit scary. They give you plenty of "stool" softeners. And you'll feel a bit sore down there for a while but pain killers should keep it under control and a nice cool ice pack.

My mum had but she had quite a lot of the buggers! She was in quite a lot of pain for a week or so but think this was because the painkillers were bunging her up a lot. She is absolutely fine now though.

I'm having this exact operation this morning for three internal piles. I'll report back later if you like!

I’ve had it twice (the first time didn’t get them all). I can confirm that it really is that bad - the first op was beyond agonising. I was in hospital for 5 days after and even morphine didn’t touch the sides of the pain, I was literally writhing in agony. It took me three months to fully recover.

The second time was day surgery as there were only a few small piles this time, and I was back on form within a week. It was barely painful at all.

I guess it ultimately depends on how bad your piles are. Mine were really bad and although I’m glad I had it done now, if for any reason they retuned in their former glory, there’s no way I’d go through the first op again.

I had it a couple of years ago. Dd was 2. Recovery was tough. I need 2 and a half weeks off work. It was so painful going to the loo which was why I needed the time off. The co codamol the hospital gave me made me vomit, which made recovery slower. but after the gp gave me a pain killer cream, that helped.

I still get piles and have to take movicol every day but I'm glad I had the operation as it helped.

Ps mine was day surgery.

the anus is as sensitive as your mouth, so, that's why external piles hurt so much. Fewer nerve endings up inside your anus, so, that's why internal ones are less painful.

I'd listen to the consultant, you need to rest afterwards and how can you possibly do that with a toddler? Did the consultant offer you a Plan B?

@imalrightjack good luck!! Please do let me know how it went.

So my last flare up lasted about 3months and no matter what I did, the doc gave me etc. absolutely nothing worked and I was in agony which is why I was referred.

But everything is currently under control so I could be fine and not have another flare up like that. Or it could happen again and I’ll have to wait until they settle again before having the op.

It’s been left that I’ll go back in 3 months so she can reassess and then decide then.

We are considering having another baby and if I’m honest this is the largest factor in me not going for it. I don’t want to make the situation any worse than it already is.

@imalrightjack how did you get on lovely?

I had an open hemorrhoidectomy (sp?) and yes, it was quite the most excruciatingly painful thing

However, I had it done as day surgery. They sent me home a couple of hours later with codeine and no information. My recovery (probably as a result of the codeine) was long and painful. I was left with a large skin tag and I’m not sure the piles ever went. I’ve still got them anyway.

TickleMyTitsTilFriday · 28/09/2019 22:54

Yes, I had mine done a year ago. I was in excruciating pain for at least 2 weeks post op but I am glad I had them done as I feel so much better now!
It will be hard with young children, mine are at school and I needed help with school runs..if you can have help during recovery then do it! Please stay off the Codine, it was the worst thing I did, I was in agony from constipation 😩.
