My Dog Ate My Passport . . .

I'm not sure the standard a passport has to be in order to travel with it. Mine still has 4 years left and I don't really want to buy a replacement because my dog got hold of it.
I will if it needs replacing but I'm not actually sure what the rules are.
The whole of one corner is slightly worn including the identification page, and there seems to be a water mark on my forehead (which I think is probably the worst bit because it might look tampered with).
I was wondering if anyone knew what was classed as acceptable wear and tear and essentially if I need to get a new one.
I've used it a lot for identity purported for the bank and things since the damage happened but obviously travelling would be a lot stricter.

Mine went swimming with me and was accepted soaking wet. When it dried it kind of bubbled up and looked awful. It was still accepted for travel, but not for visas.

You need a new passport

PrincessPain · 23/09/2019 05:24

Discoloration to the bio data page is what I'm most worried about.

Oh dear op. I’d ‘just’ get a new one - I know there’s cost and hassle in that.
The photo/forehead is the worry for me (although the bite mark is potentially great corroborative evidence of how it came to be damaged). i just wouldn’t want the stress of worrying about it added to all the other things about the travel stage of holidays which are not exactly ‘restful’.

FreshwaterBay · 23/09/2019 05:31

Was it a Border Collie? Grin

MardAsSnails · 23/09/2019 05:31

The cost of a new passport would be significantly lower than the cost of a holiday and denied travel due to a damaged passport. I’d bite the bullet and get a new one

PrincessPain · 23/09/2019 05:35

I'll bite the bullet.
Ridiculously I was going to get a new one but the passport photo machine is very bright these days. It showed every uneveness in my skin tone.
I looked red, tired and fat.
It was the worst picture I have ever seen of myself and I really didn't want to pay £90 to look at that picture for the next 10 years! My old photo was much nicer, pre children and less lighting in the booth.

Oh, and my dog is a little Jack Russel cross. Her name is Bella.

Grin Yes I’d just grit your teeth rather than be torn to shreds by border control and in tatters in a corner somewhere. Grin

Get a professional photo taken at a photography store. Loads better.

PrincessPain · 23/09/2019 05:38

Just got the border collie joke 😂
4 hours sleep and already up with 2 kids! That'll show me!

She is absolutely lovely. Bad Bella !

Phillipa12 · 23/09/2019 06:16

My friends passport had a watermark on and she was refused through passport control at the airport. Her teenage children jetted off to holiday destination, she had to make an emergency trip to get a same day passport then fly out the next day to join her children. A new passport is a lot cheaper than paying for a new flight.

nononever · 23/09/2019 06:22

Bella is one cute dog 😍 but you definitely need a new passport.

You can replace it online with a digital photo which you can get from Max Speilman the photo shop. They did a grand job with my photo!

BayandBlonde · 23/09/2019 06:32

You can take your own photo with a smartphone (there are some rules to follow) and upload it when you apply for the passport online.

I did apply a couple of filters on mine and it got accepted Smile

GCAcademic · 23/09/2019 06:39

This is the sort of thing my dog would do. We’ve had to cancel one holiday and delay departure for another thanks to the bugger.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 23/09/2019 07:05

One of my GSDs did that to my Husband's passport a few days before travelling so had to make an emergency trip to Newport to get a new one. His was worse though

redchocolatebutton · 23/09/2019 07:10

new one needed, sorry.
for photos, go to a photographer (even snappy snaps is fine). wear a top that reflects your skin colour well. maroon is good for a pale skinned person.

ContinuityError · 23/09/2019 07:35

I had slight water damage to the photo on mine years ago - was allowed to fly home but was warned to replace it before travelling again.

Definitely go to a local photographer as they’ll tidy up your photo digitally for you.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 23/09/2019 08:01

Husbands passport got wet whilst we were on holiday and some of the ink ran. We had to get an emergency one from the embassy as they said it wouldn't be accepted.

Also re your photo, who cares if it's crap? It really doesn't matter! I look like a haggard witch on mine.

HeronLanyon · 23/09/2019 08:05

I look like old lag from prisoner cell bock h on mine !!!
