Boy/girl sleepovers

Son well into puberty, wants to look good and there's talk of 'crushes'.

Wants to go to a girl's birthday sleepover. He will just have turned 14 and it will be her 14th birthday. Apparently she lives with her mum and nan. It looks like 2 or 3 girls and 2 or 3 boys.

Apparently I'm the worst parent in the worldd for saying no. These are secondary school kids so we don't know parents or anything about the girls' families, but I do know the potential boys who have been invited.

Is this a thing? Is it me being weird or would it be a no from you, too? (I went to an all-girl's school).

I was having sex at that age so every parental instinct in me would be saying no.

However, I know first hand that over protective parents raise sneaky kids...

I would probably let him go, discuss consent and safe sex if you haven’t already. I think I’m in the minority on MN though.

Also don’t be surprised if there’s not actually any parents there and they are literally camping in a field or something. Have you actually spoken to the hosts mum?

I wouldn't of let my daughter go to a mixed SO at that age. In fact I remember refusing!

I wouldn’t be happy and wondering what the hell the birthday girl’s parent is thinking. I was in sixth form before we were having mixed sleepovers (usually following a night in the pub or clubbing)

Thanks. All my instincts are saying no and DH said no, too. As neither of us experienced mixed secondary schools, wasn't sure if we were overthinking and over protective.

It would be a big no from me too.

My dd has a lovely mixed friendship group so I would absolutely say yes to this. I know and trust her and her friends are good kids. I think it all depends on the kids, do you not know any of them?

IsthisathingIwonder · 22/09/2019 23:04

I know the boys but not the girls. It's not a old school mixed group. These are new girls on the block, we don't know them. It's not like his primary group who had been friends for years. That would have a different feel, I think.

My DS is in a mixed friendship group too and had a sleepover at a girl's house last week.

I was also dubious but I let him go in the end . No way I'd let my DD have boys over here at that age though.

slashlover · 23/09/2019 10:38

Totally depends on the kids, I went to mixed group sleepovers at that age and absolutely nothing happened because we felt much more like brother/sister relationships. I also know a girl who fell pregnant at 15 because she felt pressured into sex because everyone else was.

Do you know the sleeping arrangements? Will they be in the same room or different rooms?
