To have nerves about moving?

I've been offered a new job which would mean moving to South Wales. In practice this would mean moving around 200 miles away from family and friends.
I last moved house when I was 4 and really don't remember that much about it. In the time since, I've often talked about moving away and, when looking at university, only had 1 on my application that didn't involve moving away (you can guess which one I got into. It was and still is a good university, but 20 minutes from campus doesn't really justify moving out).
I'm looking at rental properties in the areas I'm interested and have appointments booked to view a few over the next couple of weeks.
The whole moving thing is making me nervous. I'm not going to know anyone, I have to find a walker/daycare for the dog, I won't know the area and if there's traffic I won't know which routes to take to avoid it... It's just so many things to worry about and I don't like it!
Is this just normal moving nerves?

I was always a shy, anxious person, but moving away from my home town was the making of me. I’ve made friends on my own terms. You need to think of the positives of moving, rather than the negatives. List some positives?

I guess you're quite young? No children?

You'll be fine. Even if it all goes wrong...as in you don't like where you live, hate the job, awful commute...doesn't matter.

In that case, you just stick out your chin and manage as best you can whilst putting all your energy into finding another job.

The worst case scenario is just irritating and temporary...not life changing.

Re not knowing anyone..you have to push yourself out there a bit. Join things...the traffic you can get to know that in one week...and ask locals too...shopkeepers etc.

Where in South Wales is it?

Where in South Wales? It's a big place. Most of it is gorgeous!

Moving is daunting. Of course it is BUT people do it all the time. You will be really surprised how quickly you adapt to an area. All those things you think are important (being nostalgic or sentimental has no say in moving!) will become so much less important. You will find a walker/daycare for the dog and I bet within 2 weeks you will get to know the routes. It is hard to understand how to do everything in the right order but once you start it becomes easier.

It’ll be good for you. You can’t live your whole life where you happened to be born. I mean, you can, obviously, but you’ve clearly got an itch for something different. I’m going to be moving countries with a seven year old in the next few months. I’ve moved a lot internationally in my adult life, but only once, within the same country, since I had DS. It will involve a lot of work, but I think it will be a better life, for various reasons.

I'm 37, so not massively young, but not exactly old. No children, but still hope for a family in the future, which means finding someone who can tolerate me. The job is in Pontyclun, but, looking at places within a 20 mile radius.

Would it be possible to reduce the size of your search area at all? Particularly at first, most of the people you're likely to meet are through work and 20 miles is a long way to go to meet them for a drink. This is particularly true if you need to drive home first to see to the dog before going back out. Learnt this through bitter experience!

Rochim20 · 22/09/2019 22:52

@muddledmidget While I've been looking at that radius, most of the properties I've booked to view so far, are much nearer. My main reason for a 20 mile radius is just that, when I started searching, I wasn't sure what rental prices were like and wanted to get a good overview so I could do an affordability comparison (this place 20 miles away is cheaper, but if I'm spending X on fuel to get to work, it will work out that same as the place that's nearer to work).
