How long did your nose piercing hurt for?

Had my nose pierced 4 days ago, and it's getting progressively more painful. There's no swelling or redness, but could this be an early sign of an infection? AIBU to go back to the shop and check with them?

I'm going to see my tattooist next week so I'll get him to look at it. I'll make some salt water up though. Can I use table salt?

I think 4 days in I would consider taking it out and hoping it heals over.

Worlds0kayestmum · 22/09/2019 16:57

Oh gosh, I had mine done over 15 years ago and even then they said there's no way it should be done with a gun. As others have said, leave it alone, keep it clean and seek advice if it continues to cause pain

StripyHorse · 22/09/2019 16:58

Don't use table salt, it has anti caking agents. Sea salt is your friend. You need less than you think to avoid it drying out (but you do need the salt). I think the NHS website has piercing after care info.

funkylittleboatrace · 22/09/2019 17:14

I'm 4 years in and mine still plays up.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 22/09/2019 17:21

Mine probably took a good week to 10 days to stop hurting, it crusted a bit and was sore. I was a fiddler though Grin

And a gun is definitely not a good thing.

Mabelface · 22/09/2019 17:24

Sea salt and boiled water twice a day. You can also use a hot chamomile teabag on it twice a day to reduce swelling. I'd have a proper piercer who doesn't use a gun to have a look at it.

NarwhalsNarwhals · 22/09/2019 17:28

Have you caught it by any chance? I caught mine in my hair, my clothes and on my pillow a couple of times in the first few weeks which made it hurt like hell. (I'm clumsy and kept forgetting it was there). If you are worried get it checked, but I'd go to a different studio as nowhere that does it with a gun knows what they are doing.

What kind of stud have you got in at the moment?

MrMeSeeks · 22/09/2019 17:28

You need to clean any new piercing with salt water!
NOT table salt, has to be sea or rock salt

MrMeSeeks · 22/09/2019 17:29

Also to take down any swelling.

ShowOfHands · 22/09/2019 17:29

Mine didn't hurt at all after it was done.

I'm really surprised that any reputable piercer would use a gun. Do NOT change it for at least 8 weeks either.

MrMeSeeks · 22/09/2019 17:30

ibuprofen To take down any swelling

Elphame · 22/09/2019 17:37

If you must use salt water (and this is now outdated advice) it is literally just a pinch in a glass full. Most people make it too strong and it just dries out the skin. Tea tree is also not recommended for brand new piercings, it is very strong.

It is the gun that is causing the issue and I expect they've used low quality jewellery which could be giving you a reaction. You need to go and see a different piercer to be assessed abd get the correct jewellery fitted.

Even then it's going to be sore and grumpy for a good while.

TheJoxter · 22/09/2019 17:38

Definitely shouldn’t have been pierced with a gun! But too late to do anything about that now, just never go back to the same place... wait a lot longer than two weeks before changing it to a ring too, six weeks at least, having a ring in while it’s healing can cause a lump of scar tissue (keloid). Mine took a couple of weeks to stop hurting but I’m a slow healer.

MonstranceClock · 22/09/2019 17:48

I'm not too worried about it, it looks fine it's just sore, but I am a massive a whimp. I sleep on my front, so chances are I've squished it in my sleep last night and thats why it's hurting so much today.

purpleolive · 22/09/2019 17:51

When I got mine done I kept knocking it and getting little lumps and it would sore, they advised an aspirin solution on the piercing. When cleaning you can use contact lense solution but you don't need to do it often and try not to touch the piercing or twist it. As I've gotten used to it I'm catching it less!

Craftycorvid · 22/09/2019 17:57

Got mine done with a needle and had a stud for a month or so while it healed. The stud was the one with the corkscrew type back to it. It’s no wonder your nose is sore if they used the type of stud with a butterfly back. There will be swelling and the tightness of the backing will be making that hurt. Salt water bathing and see a reputable piercer for advice. I just let mine be and it was fine. Swapped it out for a ring and pretty happy with it.

BrexitSucks · 22/09/2019 18:41

Squished in your sleep sounds plausible. I was told to be careful coz nose infections can quickly spread to brain, but then the nose is full of germs normally, so I'm not so sure.

4 Info: I had my nose done with a gun & butterfly back, for cheap price. I felt like I had been stabbed for 2 seconds & not a single problem since ... 30 yrs ago (!!) I probably used any cheap disinfectant, we quite like H2O2 & rubbing alcohol. Must have turned it regularly.

age 13 Ears done with a gun: no problem.
age 20 Ears done with a needle: lots of low grade recurring problems ever since.

Mouikey · 22/09/2019 19:02

I hand mine done with a gun about 25 or so years ago - also a massive stud but thankfully no back. I am so surprised places are still using guns for any piercing!

It will take a long time to heal, so keep it clean with saline and keep an eye for it getting hot, red and inflamed (sure signs of infection).

Even now mine still closes over (if I’ve taken my stud out) so I have to pop a stud through it and it still hurts like hell for a while!

Keep an eye on it and keep it clean. Try not to sleep on it or knock it.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/09/2019 07:33

I would absolutely be going to a different piercing studio and asking their advice. I know it’s too late now but the place you went gave terrible advice - it should never have been done with a gun and water alone is not enough. That they think it would be ok to change the jewellery within a fortnight is another warning bell - it should be a minimum of six weeks.

SuperPixie247 · 23/09/2019 07:43

Did you not do any research before you got a facial modification? How naive (at best) and stupid (at worst) do you have to be to get it done by a gun? It goes against every last thing you would have read online.

Not sure what you expect your tattoo artist from his basement to do

MonstranceClock · 23/09/2019 09:40

What my tattoo artist who is a qualified piercer with his own studio?
It was just a whim, me and friend walked past and decided to get it done. Pretty much everyone I know has been pierced in this studio and not had any problems. I don’t even think I have a problem, it’s just sore.

Monstrance (Ghost fan?) I might have seemed a bit harsh but I do have absolute sympathy as my first nose piercing was done with a gun.
This was back in the 90's when it wasn't really common knowledge that it was a very bad idea.

I speak from bitter experience. The stud shattered the cartilage as guns do and within a few days it got more painful. The lump appeared by the wound by the end of the first week and gradually got bigger. For about a month I went for salt soaks as hot as I could stand them as the internet suggested (dial up days) that was the best method to cure what I now know was a 'granuloma'. It didn't work and eventually I admitted defeat and took out the stud.
Once everything had healed and the granuloma gone I had it repierced with a needle.

I've had lots of piercings since then, all with needles and none have given me an issue. Keep an eye on it now but if that little lump appears then it's probably time to give up and start again.

MonstranceClock · 23/09/2019 11:29

Yes big ghost fan haha! You weren’t harsh, I’m russian so I’m quite a blunt person anyway Grin

It seems fine, and was a really good idea after a few afternoon beers! It’s a lot less painful today, I’m just a big whimp.

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/09/2019 12:12

You might get away with it, just don't mess and if you do go for salt water don't use table. Personally I'd just wipe around it carefully with an unscented baby wipe or similar.

Also a big Ghost fan btw, shall be in Nottingham in November!
