Just that really. I need to buy an over-bath shower screen. Ahh the excitement. Don't really know where to start. Please enliven my dull rainy Sunday with your shower screen do/don'ts!! If you love yours, or your cousin's, or hate your MILs (wrong thread perhaps) then why? Happy to spend a sensible amount to get a decent one - I remember my parents' old ones leaked and the seals were hideous to clean.
I have a tall DH and not very house-trained splashy DC so guess I need one at least 1500 tall. Not sure how wide or whether it should fold or slide or whatnot. Don't know what makes are likely to be any good. Soft water here thank goodness. Any ideas? Thank you!

Soft water is most of the battle.

Bloody hate ours (curved cubicle) and it’s forever bloody marked. I appear to be the only one capable of cleaning it

nononever · 22/09/2019 11:37

We have a big walk in shower with what is essentially a glass wall. I love it but hate bloody cleaning it so that's my husband's job. I can't reach the top of it without a step. I also try and get in the shower first so that I don't have to wipe it down afterwards Grin

bigbluebus · 22/09/2019 11:38

Our over bath screen is just a plain screen with a curved edged at the outer top. It swivels right out at right angles giving good access to cleaning the bath and also for cleaning the screen without having to climb into the bath to do it. The seal at the bottom slides off easily for cleaning and seems to hold the water in. It has stood up to the heavy useage of my 6ft 3 DS and still looks like new 12 months after installation even though we are in a hard water area. It was not expensive - think it was an ow brand from a local plumbers merchant/bathroom. Showroom.

ladygracie · 22/09/2019 11:39

I hate cleaning mine as, like others, I am the only one who does it but also, no matter what I do, it is looks crap. It’s curved and that definitely doesn’t help. So my advice is to get a flat one - much easier to clean. I do like how it looks when clean though. Not sure that’s much help, sorry.

Pinkywoo · 22/09/2019 11:42

I hate ours with a passion, it only opens outwards because of a bumpy bit on the bath, which means it blocks the whole of the bathroom and drips everywhere, and don't get me started on cleaning it! I fantasise about smashing it and getting a nice shower curtain that can go in the washing machine.

Fuma · 22/09/2019 11:47

I've got a curtain. Screens are more aesthetically pleasing but unless you have a maid who follows you around everywhere cleaning your shit up they're also more work. I put the curtain (actually I have two) through the wash every couple of days. Then it's clean. Much less time and effort than cleaning a screen.

Toomuchstuffwillkillme · 22/09/2019 11:53

Hmm thank you very much esp bigbluebus that sounds like what I need (don't suppose you can remember where it came from?!)
Am glad the water is soft here as I am rubbish at cleaning anything... used to live in the SE and though I think the water was healthier to drink the limescale was a nightmare

Ours is a folding Daryl that goes along half of the bath. It does its job. We have very hard water so accept it will look cloudy almost all the time.

Toomuchstuffwillkillme · 22/09/2019 11:55

and I know half of Mumsnet has a weird obsession with washing absolutely everything to death - but you wash your shower curtain every 2 days! Seriously?!

Another vote for fabulous washable shower curtains ... Mine has a kraaken on it. I love the thing!

UsedtobeFeckless · 22/09/2019 11:59

Definitely not washed every two days though! Grin

Ebonyandivory2 · 22/09/2019 11:59

We wash our shower curtain around once a month Blush I didn’t realise some wash it more often than that. I hate shower screens they’re an absolute hassle to clean. H&M has lovely shower curtain designs so we decided to go with that since they’re so easy to clean

QueenRefusenik · 22/09/2019 12:02

Hated our screen, ripped it out and replaced it with a shower curtain. I hardly ever wash it, occasionally spray it with Dettol and leave to soak and that seems to do the trick. The only downside is the tension rod falls down every so often but it's quite easy to put back up so no big deal.

Trafalger · 22/09/2019 12:02

Another shower curtain person here. I bung it in the wash probably once a month and then just hang up to dry. We couldn't have a screen due to a teeny bathroom and I much prefer the curtain. I dont have to scrub the bloody thing like my last screen.

We redid our bathroom about 3 years ago and since have lived with a shower curtain due to indecision about a screen.

Our latest thoughts are a small screen to protect the very corner where we do have to be careful not go get water over the floor combined with a curtain like this

www.kudosshowers.co.uk/products/category/bathscreens/collection/inspire/over-bath-shower-panel/

Not sure whether it's a bit too hotel like though

jaseyraex · 22/09/2019 12:11

We have a screen in our teeny tiny bathroom, it only opens inwards as it's right next to the sink so bumps off that if you try to open it outwards. My 1 year old enjoys banging it against the sink over and over again and, I won't lie, I'm hoping it'll bloody break. Hate it. Feel like I spend my life cleaning it. I am fully planning on getting rid of it and getting a nice curtain instead.

RandomUsernameHere · 22/09/2019 12:20

We have an over bath one in the DC's bathroom that is fixed to the bath. I prefer this to the swivelling ones as they leak and the plastic bit along the bottom always gets discoloured on those.

dudsville · 22/09/2019 12:24

We're have one enclosed shower with a pita to clean glass, and the other, over the bath, was replaced with a curved curtain that gets washed a few times a year. LOVE the curtain. We replaced the enclosed shower screen from the previous very old one. The previous very old one was wad a doddle to clean. I think the new glass is different and maybe better at shattering safely but harder to clean?

theluckiest · 22/09/2019 12:43

Lemons!! That's what you need.

Ours is a crappy folding one that always looked cloudy. I read that wiping half a lemon over it and then rinsing takes off the crud and, by god, it works.

You can then use the other half in a G&T. You're welcome Grin

athenagoddessofwar · 22/09/2019 12:49

Hate my flat glass screen. Soft water too but cannot get marks off. Tried everything, including watching YouTube videos. Lemons, bicarb of soda, salt wash, cleaning with tumble dryer sheets. Urgh. Nothing will shift it. Drives me potty, but as it's an enclosed shower, can't replace with curtain, otherwise I would in a second

MitziK · 22/09/2019 12:59

I loved mine. Until I slipped and fell into it one night. Several gouges in the bath and it's apparently impossible to obtain a 1p replacement of the shitty plastic hinge that snapped, so that was £150 wasted.

bellsbuss · 22/09/2019 13:04

I keep a window cleaner squidgy in every shower in the house and everyone knows they have to use it to scrape the water of the glass after showering. It helps prevent the build up of lime scale. Once a week I strip off put a shower cap on jump in and give them a clean with cillit bang.

nononever · 22/09/2019 13:11

Same here but I am never last in the shower, I make sure of it, and there's only two of us Grin. We also have a glass cloth too, my husband does a much better job than me.

CocoLoco87 · 22/09/2019 13:11

I'm ambivalent towards it. We have 2 squeegees and a daily shower spray thing which we never use Grin. The cleaner does it once a week and it looks good enough!
