How much do you pay for Teenagers phone?

I am a teacher with a dd who is about to turn 14. She attends the school I teach at. For her birthday or Christmas she would like a phone contract for her birthday.

Most pupils do have an iPhone or the new Samsung. I am actually quite shocked at the phones they have.

What do your teens have? At the moment mine has my old iphone on a ten pounds sim only deal. I think this is enough. However the battery is poor but I could replace that for £90. Not increasing the contract.

@MamaGee09 I'd be looking for a new contract. That's ridiculously expensive. I get 10gb data and unlimited called and texts for £16 a month sim only.

pikapikachu · 22/09/2019 14:06

PS a contract for a 14 yo is never a good idea

3 kids on iPhone contracts from y7 here. They can't go over budget and haven't smashed their screen.

In y6 they had the cheapest smart phone I could get so £10 Argos jobs. They took good care of those so had iPhones for secondary.

hartof · 22/09/2019 14:09

Mine has my old iPhone 8 and I pay for a sim only contract for her £7.50 unlimited calls and texts and I can gift her 100gb of data a month

RedskyLastNight · 22/09/2019 14:10

I'm horrified at the amount some spend on phones, but I presume this is in line with people's income and lifestyle.

DD has DH's old phone (3 year's old when she had it). DS did get a new phone for his birthday but it was of the cheaper variety.
They are both on PAYG, £5 a month. We did look at contracts when we bought DS's new phone, but even considered over 3 years, nothing was remotely as cheap as buying the phone outright and using PAYG. I can't imagine spending more than about £10 a month on a phone, but clearly I'm out of step ...

PekkaNek · 22/09/2019 14:13

Ds has my old iPhone 6s and his contract is £10 per month. Before I gave him the phone, I replaced the battery at Apple and it cost £45.

PekkaNek · 22/09/2019 14:16

I pay around £35 per month for my phone, but around £10 each got teen Ds and dd.

RedskyLastNight · 22/09/2019 14:17

This being middle classy mums net, posters earning a good whack will happily let their teens have crappy old phones

Actually my teens have significantly better phones than I do. Because I don't set great store by having the latest gadget, but understand that having something of a minimum standard is important to my teens. That still doesn't mean an expensive phone contract though!

Mustbetimeforachange · 22/09/2019 14:18

Gosh, I can't believe the prices here. Is there insurance included for when they lose it? We all have £150-200 motorola phones with giff gaff sims. They usually last about 2.5-3 years. They are good looking phones & there is no "shame" attached to having them. All smart phones look pretty similar these days.

Fishcakey · 22/09/2019 14:43

My DS 14 has had a contract for the last four years. What's the issue? It makes him careful, he knows he will have to replace the phone himself if he damages it or loses it as I have to keep paying. I pay about £40 a month for his iPhone 8 with 30g of data which our BT plus then doubles. We go camping a lot so the data is worth the money.

Fishcakey · 22/09/2019 14:43

Forget to say, contract is capped. He can't run up a bill.

Thornhill58 · 22/09/2019 14:44

£17.50 a month unlimited text, calls and 20g of data with Vodafone. I think that's cheaper than pay as you go.

Thornhill58 · 22/09/2019 14:46

Our ds has an my old iPhone 6.

cjpark · 22/09/2019 14:52

2 DD, both have a newish iPhone on a contract. They weren't allowed one until secondary school and the bill is capped at £30 a month.

RingtheBells · 22/09/2019 19:44

I’m surprised how many have iPhones, I thought most young people preferred Samsung and other Android phones

MrsPnut · 22/09/2019 19:49

Youngest DD has a cast off iPhone 7 and an ID mobile sim only contract at £12 a month with a £5 cap on extra spending. It has 6GB of data so she never needs to use her cap.

DamonSalvatoresDinner · 22/09/2019 19:53

Mine has my old 6S (which is in immaculate condition) and I added her to my contract for £9 a month. For this she gets unlimited calls and texts and shares my 20GB if data. Works out great as long as she doesn't take the piss with the data (she doesn't. It's WiFi the moment she can)

sansou · 22/09/2019 19:54

DS(15) has an iphone 6s bought outright 2 yrs ago on PAYG giffgaff £10. Battery already replaced once for £45. He would like a newer model but not desperate for one. If he does well in his GCSE's next year, we'll consider contributing to a new model.
DD(12) has an iphone SE bought outright last year on PAYG giffgaff £8. She's happy enough with her phone.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/09/2019 19:55

Ds 13 just got an iPhone 11, we bought it cash (ds paying half) and we have a sim only contract which is £25 per month.

Ds plays multiple sports 6x a week, sometimes 3 sports per day, his old iphone has been given to my Mum whose handset was 10 plus years old (we replaced the battery)

Myself and ds’s have iPhones, ah has the layers Samsung.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/09/2019 19:56

*dh has latest Samsung

theendofsummer · 22/09/2019 20:02

I bought a Huawei Y7 2019 handset and used a Virgin Mobile SIM.
£13 a month for unlimited texts, calls and 15GB data. The unused data rolls over , so he currently has 35GB.
I also got insurance from Carphone Warehouse Geek Squad. £20 a year.
Unlimited replacement like for like for broken phones. Already used it twice.

JadeDragon23 · 22/09/2019 20:03

Not teen yet but ds11 has a Samsung S7 which we bought outright. He has a PAYG sim and £10 gets him 250 minutes, unlimited texts and 3GB which is plenty.

Dh and I also recently switched to PAYG and I find it time. My iPhone 7 is fine and I have no burning desire to have the latest model every year.

StephenKingsHappyEnding · 22/09/2019 20:06

I’m quite surprised at the price some people are paying per month. As I said up thread, we pay £9 per month for 8gb data (actually they get 12gb as there was an offer on) and unlimited calls and texts.

DorisTheFlorist · 22/09/2019 20:08

I bought my DD a BlackBerry. She's now gone NC

Mustbetimeforachange · 22/09/2019 20:09

iPhone 11s are £700+. For a young teenager? Really?

joblotbubble · 22/09/2019 20:09

One of mine has used gift gaff (£25 a month now, it used to be much cheaper, for unlimited) and any old iPhone going for as long as he has had a phone. He is 16 now and has an iPhone 6s

Another had a contract with the latest available iPhone from age 12 which was upgraded at 14 & 16 and is due for either upgrade or cancellation very soon, he hasn't decided whether to pay is and keep it as is, or to go it alone. Obviously he will get a better deal staying under the existing contract as he is just 18. I'm currently paying £59 a month for it.

Eldest didn't get a smartphone until last year and he is 20!
