University arrivals should be staggered

Absolute carnage in our city again. Students all arrive in one weekend. Solid traffic jams and disruption.
Why can they not be scheduled to arrive over two weekends? 🤔The pollution form all the stationery cars was horrible

Ours were staggered over a weekend. Parents stayed at a local hotel so was easy in and out.

Highly recommend Premier Apartments and similar.

at least it was lighthearted. I too have been a student ! No offence intended at all.

Nottingham managed to avoid the half marathon weekend for this year. They often coincide which is ridiculous planning.

DS also has swimming lessons at a local University and we got stuck in loads of traffic yesterday. It looked so stressful, cars at a standstill waiting for hall car parks. Took us 40 minutes to get off campus. Felt very sorry for the frazzled looking parents ( a lot who were then being stung for a further £200+ for their kids to join the sports centre! )

Both the unis my dc went to DID stagger it over a week. They could move into halls up to a week before induction/freshers started and had to book a slot. Reading and NUA.

I still live locally to my university city. Yesterday DD went to a party near my old halls in the afternoon. She was subjected to a long train of consciousness of nostalgia about the good old days (the clean version!) I love seeing the students arrive. Brings it all back. Usually I'm very grumpy about traffic too.

The huge Asda across the road from several big Halls where DS1 started last Sept's moving in day was being run with military precision. As soon as one pallet of duvets was cleared, another arrived. They had 'uni essentials' grouped together and people barking orders into headsets 😊.

We arrived early and overheard on person say to another he thought it would be busier. I interrupted them to say 'Have you seen the queue of cars waiting to drop off?!'

I live close to one and go to the gym there. Sudden influx of young people from September -october then they soon stop going. It's worse than January at the gym now!

I live in a place known for both unis and touristy things. The students can be a bit annoying, same with the huge busloads of tourists, but the worst behavior I witness is often middle aged locals stumbling time from the pub and swearing in the streets. My conclusion is that everyone is annoying and at least we have the students to keep our economy going. A nearby town without students but similar in other ways is just....grim. i wouldn't like to live there.

I think one of the problems is that new students don't feel able to organise deliveries to halls. Universities could do a lot to facilitate a move in where students could order most of their new stuff online for delivery and pick them up in halls. Students could then travel on public transport with a suitcase or two. In fact talking to people of my parents generation that is almost what they did as they sent a trunk on in advance (which would be sitting in their room when they turned up).

Try living in Sheffield, university returners & freshers weekend & the city centre blocked with a 10k this morning, total chaos.

SistersOfMerci · 22/09/2019 18:24

Christ alive I'm done in.

Indeed Aldi shelves were ransacked today when we went to collect food supplies for our little darling.

Her housemates are already being arseholes so I suspect we'll be driving back next weekend to bring her down off the ceiling.

I'm glad we only need to do this a maximum of two more times depending on where she does her LPC.

theendofsummer · 22/09/2019 22:08

Nat6999 yes Sheffield ! Absolute mess up

Sure it's annoying but what can you do? Have some students move in a week or two early and pay an extra 1 or 2 weeks rent just for your convenience? Just mark the dates and adapt. At least it's infrequent.

I went to Cambridge and half the year it was heaving with tourists who were always standing around in the way so you had to try (at least a bit anyway) not to mow them all down while cycling and it invariably made you late.

There are benefits to living in a touristy university town (it's less likely to be a complete shithole for example)

Live and let live.
