To think flights should be ATOL protected? Thomas Cook

Why is it just package holidays? Why not flights?

Booked my first ever family holiday and had no idea about ATOL protection not applying if you bought flights separately to the accommodation.

I got insurance.

Told this insurance does not cover airline bankruptcy/failure.

Called insurance and they said I cannot upgrade to Flight protection insurance because its now a known issue and it won't be valid

So I've spend 2600 on flights and my insurance is wank and I'm not ATOL protected.

So if I fly out and Thomas Cook go under how do I get home? I do not have the money to pay for flight s home

Does this mean I have to just abandon my holiday? :(

Ive been crying all afternoon.

This was supposed to be our first family holiday abroad and its just turned into hell

There’s absolutely no winners in this.

For me, TCs trouble ramped up after their appalling attitude after the deaths of the young children due to CO poisoning. I made a conscious effort to avoid them after that and I suspect many others did too

Hope this reassures

That sucks OP, it’s such a shame for you. I wouldn’t beat yourself up about the insurance, I am a lawyer and wouldn’t scan the small print of my insurance to check I was covered for airline failure, it’s such a remote risk that it has never crossed my mind to do so. In any event, as a pp has pointed out, so many insurance products limit their liability and have excess payments etc that it usually just take the edge off any loss rather than compensates fully for it.

If I were you, I would just go on holiday. I would wager that the majority of people with flight only deals aren’t covered for this event and the prices of last minute return flights with alternative airlines will be astronomical. The government will have no choice but to step in and manage the fall out like they did with Monarch.

When are you supposed to be flying out?

I’m so sorry @MarthasGinYard & to others who have lost their job Flowers

Sorry it has come to this with today's news.

I wonder how it works then - thos with ATOL protection presumably get home without charge to the Government. Those not, those not on packages, tax payers pay to get them home so then if that person claims on their credit card for some kind of refund because some element of the return flight was not as they contracted for does that refund then go to the state as we already paid to get them home?

I'm sorry @MarthasGinYard and other posters who have lost jobs as a result of today's news.
