Doc martens

So I’m in my 30s and purchased my first pair of doc martens ! I have a few questions for those who have a pair or two!

  1. Sizing? I ordered a child’s size 5 however they feel big - I am a size 5 and I’ve heard a lot of people saying that they found doc martens small fitting ? I have thick socks on and can’t really feel the toe.
  1. Should I treat them before I wear them? They are soft and matte? With what?

Sorry this might not be an aibu more of a clueless 30 something with no idea about these shoes!

Depends on the style. I'm a 6 and I find the basic lace up style too narrow but the length is fine.

Can you order a half size down to compare before wearing?

I've never treated them but if they are like the soft Virginia leather ones I'd just use a suede protector spray.

Maybe try the 5's on again with sole inserts?

As for care - there is nothing better for leather than Kocaoline!

Even better if you dress with Neatsfoot Oil first.

Get a small paint brush, apply the oil all over, let soak for 20 or so minutes - you will be amazed how much oil the boots will soak up.

Then apply Kocaoline, liberally with a cloth, again allow to soak in for a few minutes then buff with a clean cloth.
It is messy! - but your boot leather will last a lifetime treated this way.

if theyre too big, then surely you would return them ?

London91 · 21/09/2019 14:41

I have always found doc martens to come up too big. I'm a size 6 but have always brought a 5. I think the classic ones are unisex but not entirely sure on that. Have you worn them out yet? Maybe see if you can get a 4.

CatsOnCatnip · 21/09/2019 14:41

I’ve heard they come up big but find they definitely don’t (personally) I’m a 5, size 4 fits perfectly but they always feel massive to walk in as that’s the style. I don’t personally treat my matte ones. Maybe I should... never thought about it 😬 I have a size 5 pair as well, sole insert and thick socks work fine. Still super roomy. They’re my winter warmers.

lidoshuffle · 21/09/2019 14:42

I bash the edges of mine a bit before wearing and rub in dubbin (I've never heard of Kocaoline, I will look this up!)

Wear thick socks with them and they will be like walking on air!

I love Dr Martens and have loads. To pre warn you they fucking kill for a while until you break them in.
Thick sock, fabric conditioner on the inside overnight helps too

Ivechanged19 · 21/09/2019 15:11

Thanks for all the replies! I actually have insoles and I do think if I wear insoles they will fit fine - I was afraid to put them in encase they dye the inside (before I decide whether to keep them or try the 4) I don’t k if it’s because they are so new like when I pull the laces they don’t tighten - I feel like if they tightened they would be fine - such a doc marten virgin Blush

I'm a size 6 but have always brought a 5.

Brought them where? Home for the shop?

Some styles come up small (the Pascale is definitely very narrow fitting) and some don't. I find that the Wonderbalm is a good product to use on them, too.

Different types of DMs are made of different leather, too. Most of them except the "Made in England" (old school, thick leather like DMs used to be) wear in quite quickly, I find, but the Made in England ones take a while to break in.

(I have 4 pairs of DMs Blush)

I have several pairs. Docs go up to 5 1/2 in children's sizes which is brilliant and they come with a zip down the inner side which is great for my arthritic feet and fused joint. I don't know whether the leather is softer but I've never had to do much to them. I don't go for the plain ones but the ones with patterns or glittery though; during the colder months at work, people always want to see which ones I'm wearing.

When I had the joint fusion, it severely restricted the shoes and boots that I can wear. I decided that if I had to wear comfy granny shoes, they would be the funkiest granny shoes out there! I live in Fitflops (sandals, shoes and boots) and Docs, and I'm 58.
