Can I ask your experiences of the Mirena coil?

I’m sorry if this question has been done to death but has anyone had or have had a Mirena coil? Can I ask for your experiences either good or bad? I keep putting off having one, I have horrendous heavy periods due to uterine polyps (which I keep having removed but the buggers keep growing back!). I have been told a mirena will shrink them. I am so worried about side effects but I am getting to the point where these periods are ruling my life, draining the life out of me and I need to do something but really worry the Mirena may cause me issues (weight gain, headaches, depression, anxiety etc) I also worry if there is a risk of breast cancer with it? Yes, I am a worrier 😆

I've had two....both had to be removed within weeks due to the pain and bleeding I experienced. With the first I vomited on insertion and then on and off for hours afterwards, along with fainting in the car on the way home. The second went in with less hassle (much gentler nurse!) but still caused so much ongoing pain that I couldn't take it.
I think I have a body that goes into shock when poked in the vagina with a t shaped device! 😂😂

Mine fell off in 6-8 weeks after I had it removed, no extra effort it just melted away

BettyBloom · 21/09/2019 10:11

I've had mine coming up to three years. My periods have stopped completely which is great as I used to get crippling cramps and very heavy periods. The only downside for me is that I have gained weight) only a few pounds) and can't seem to shift it.

I LOVED mine and miss it every day.

The only reason I didn't get another is that I'm extremely tilted and it was a bit of an ordeal having it fitted.

Had a lovely 5 years with it. No periods, no weight gain, nice skin. Not like the pill I'm on now 😢

Makes sense it would fall off afterwards. It was extra effort trying to lose it while waiting for it to be removed, can still feel the hunger pangs.

Marvellous! I had two. Not very pleasant having it fitted, but over in seconds. I went from a monthly tidal wave to nothing in two months! No side effects.

Fantastic I had my last one for 7 years. No problem only benefits.

Hated it.

Very effective contraception though, mainly because I never wanted to have sex ever again while I had it in.

Also made me very low, and I am naturally a glass half full person.

A shame, because the no periods aspect of it was awesome.

Much easier to inset than I expected (but was only a few weeks post partum so that probably helped) and miraculous effect on periods - I have very light ones these days. I still have the original mirena from 12 years ago and perods are still light, which is brilliant. However, no sex drive at all (hence no need to change to a new mirena), have put on weight, still get PMS and am more prone to anxiety than I was 12 years ago.... BUT I can't be sure any of this is due to the mirena or a combination of exhaustion/stress/perimenopause etc... I think the benefits outweigh the negatives if you do want to have a sex life, because it's so much better than condoms and doesn't mess with you as much as the pill.

Mine was excellent the first time (Pre kids) and I had no periods at all although the first 6 weeks or so I wanted it out as I had horrendous bleeding and pain.

Second, third and fourth times I didn’t get on with it at all (the second time was constantly bleeding for months and became severely anaemic) and fell pregnant with it twice. Now I’ve been sterilised and my periods have gone from 7-8 days to 4.

Honestly in your shoes I’d definitely give it a go, at least you’ll have ruled it out if it doesn’t work. But give it a good few months to settle.
At one point I called it a miracle, I was so happy with it

Goldenhedgehog · 21/09/2019 11:15

I had one put in about 6 months ago. Insertion was no big deal at all really. I had really heavy periods before, now they are much lighter. No weight gain. Sex drive no change. Took a while to settle and I still get occasional spotting between periods, but it’s much better.

Rangoon I really want an ablation. I was due to have one 2 years ago, the gynaecologist had agreed that I could have one under a local as I have a huge fear of general anaesthetics. On the day I went into theatre but the anaesthetist refused to allow me to have it under a local, I was gutted!
JorisBonson I have a very tilted womb
