To want new sofas even though the old ones are "fine"?

Really annoyed with DH. We have these two massive leather sofas that are very low (not good for your back). He and them before I moved in. They're ok, I don't particularly like the look of them.
We were going to get new ones a while ago but agreed we wouldn't for a while as have a DC 1 who spilled stiff ok them etc.
Now DC is 2 and were expecting no 2. I keep thinking about new couches again, how they'd change the room etc.
Just mentioned it and DH sighed and got all shitty about it saying he thought we'd 'got past this' (wtf) and decided. I said people can change their minds!
Ergh just think I'm super irritable.

Would you get new sofas with young kids? Or just wait?

Ok I realise I've written a very long post about sofas and yes it's probably very boring and yes I'm probably very old.
I'm also in bed in my pyjamas about to go to sleep if that paints a better picture

I wouldn’t get new ones with small kids just yet especially as you’ve just got them. But you know what your finances are like and you’re the ones that have to live with the sofas!

Shmithecat2 · 20/09/2019 21:50

Yanbu. Leather sofas are hideous anyway.

LetItGoHome · 20/09/2019 21:52

I'd definitely wait until at least past the toddler age. When I think of all the wee/poo/vomit/general sticky stuff my sofas have endured, I think I'd weep if they where new.

KellyHall · 20/09/2019 21:53

I'd wait. Our sofa and carpets were new when we had our dc (and a cat decided to come and live with us), now they look more than twice their age but they're not going to be anything other than wrecked more for years to come.

I expect dc will enjoy playing sports and come in with muddly clothes or decide eating at the table is not cool any more and spill food all over the sofa instead or, as I did when I was younger, refuse to take off buckled sandals and rip a huge hole in a sofa cushion Confused

LolaSmiles · 20/09/2019 21:53

If they work and you've got young kids I wouldn't bother changing them.

Loads of sofas arent made to last anyway. When we shopped for ours there was a lot of tat designed to last a year or so, be fashionable and then go to landfil/charity warehouses.

Why not wait til the kids are bigger, then invest in some really nice ones.

I have 3 DSs, eldest is 11, youngest 5, sofas are 18 years d. Now we are clear of potty training, thinking of replacing sofa. Current sofa cushions have been washed in the bath so many times, but glad we've waited. They would have ruined anything new x

These are the sofas you are going out with.

You marry a sofa after your children stop throwing up and smearing everywhere.

Omg sorry I'll report and get my post deleted!

AgeLikeWine · 21/09/2019 21:24

If the sofas are uncomfortable or are causing back problems, I would replace them.

If it was just about appearance / style I could never replace them before they were properly worn out and knackered, especially if the replacements were going to be trashed by children. I’m very frugal so I just can’t bear the idea of spending hard-earned money replacing serviceable stuff which isn’t broken.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I've made up my mind and will put up with them for a few more years to come.

@MrsTerryPratchett that really made me laugh 🤣
