To report neighbours to police?

I suspect my neighbours are growing cannibis. We’re in a council flat and Several times I’ve noticed a very strong odour through the party wall. It’s well beyond what one might expect if just casually smoking in the garden (I’ve smelled that from another neighbour, to each his own, etc). It’s quite rank and permeates our entire flat.

A few times it smells as if there’s been a fire (bonfire) inside of our home - mixture of wood/plastic and cannibis odour. I suspect perhaps a light has caught fire or a piece of equipment? Extremely strong such that I’m not able to breathe and have to leave the flat, on one occasion even there was a bit of haziness coming into our flat.

WIBU to report this to police? (If so, how do i chase this up)? Council have been notified but treat it as a noise complaint, if no odour when visiting then they can’t do anything. I don’t have much strong evidence except chatting with other neighbours who’ve also smelled he odours and been alarmed by them.

Name change as potentially identifying.

If they are rented properties I'd contact the landlord. I wouldn't be at all happy at the fire risk .

Okurrrrrrrr · 20/09/2019 19:34

Can you see any other evidence? Foil against the windows, random wires coming out, dark rooms, lots of lamps?

Reportmyneighbours · 20/09/2019 21:11

I avente checked for wires, windows are always shuttered. Don’t see them go in or out, ever really.

Maybe call 101 & ask them to do a welfare check as you can smell something coming from the flat and you haven't seen anyone come or go for X amount of time?

dollydaydream114 · 20/09/2019 21:43

Phone the police on 101 and report what you've noticed. They can decide for themselves if they think it's likely to be what you suspect, but your suspicions sound relatively plausible to me.

I’m partially tempted to say call the fire brigade when the smoke gets to the point you have the haze in the air and it’s so bad you have to leave the house - because that’s a lot of smoke, something burning. I also say this as a flat and shop near us burnt down due to a faulty cannabis light. Young family with baby just escaped and baby was hospitalised for smoke inhalation. you are facing significant potential health risk.

Why say that when its not true? Just phone 101 and report the real concerns

OP you can report it via 101 or Crimestoppers. Outline your concerns. Theyll either check it out or record it as intelligence

The fire brigade are extremely worried in the rise of cannabis fires. Ring the police with your concerns, fire brigade when you have the hazy/smelly smoke

I would report it. When we lived in Brighton DH smelt smoke downstairs in our house one day, I couldn't smell it but he has a very acute sense of smell so went to investigate. He looked next door and saw flames in their kitchen. Luckily nobody was home but when the fire brigade came it turned out they were growing dope, full on set up in a cupboard with heat lamps which is what had caused the blaze. The house was uninhabitable for months, we were evacuated but luckily there was no damage to our house. Contact the drug squad rather than just reporting to the police, if you suspect they are cultivating the drug squad will take it seriously.

Thank you, there was one incident when the fire brigade came-they agreed thee was a bit of haze and very strong burning odours (fire and cannibis) but said they didn’t know what caused it, likely someone smoking (though all of our windows were closed of course, how would smoke
Have entered?) but in a semi i suppose there are loads of holes and cracks for things to seep through ?

Wait, what - the fire brigade came out, agreed there was a smell of smoke, but did nothing about it? That sounds very odd because if the fire brigade think there is a fire they are duty bound to deal with it, even if they have to break down doors to do so.

I suspect there isn't as much smoke as you are suggesting.
