Why can’t they have basic fish?

School dinners. My DC never seem to have fish that is not deep fried, battered or hidden in a dish (covered in mash and/or sauce, broken down in small pieces).
Why can’t it be simply pan fried or steamed?
It is almost as if we don’t want DC to «see» the fish.

They have salmon frittata at my DC’s school. Apparently it’s one of the least popular meals, although mine don’t mind it.

@Obviouspretzel plain fish freshly cooked to order is very different from plain fish that's sat for ages under heat lamps!

I love fresh fish but I certainly wouldn't fancy it lukewarm from a school canteen.

I can't actually do mackerel because it gives me a migraine)

Mackerel's funny anyhow - needs to be still flapping on the plate or it isn't fresh enough to eat.

Is a weird fish . . .

When I was 6 I was kept in the lunch hall for 2 hours for refusing to eat sardines.

They were looking at me.

I've never had a sardine with a head on (though I have seen them) but I wouldn't eat whitebait for the same reason.

All those little accusing eyes . . . . .

My kids love fish, I often think I’d happily become pescatarian. School has such a hard job in prep, what with them also making and shipping to another local school as their kitchen doesn’t have facilities for the 400+ meals they need to provide for their children’s meals.

But I prepare the majority of their fish meals at home, although school does ‘fishy fridays’ which is fish fingers or fish in batter with chips peas and baked beans. Which at home my kids refuse to eat (the beans I mean)
I’m happy knowing my kids get that, at home they’re obsessed with smoked haddock which is stupidly expensive but a massive favourite from all of us so I don’t mind 🤷🏻‍♀️
