Is it possible to put a clause in a will to stop someone selling something after you're dead?

Just that really.

I've always been told that a certain object must stay in my life forever because it's In The Will That It Must Never Be Sold.

This has been told to me since i was a child and i've always grudgingly accepted it - suddenly i'm wondering .... is this even a real thing? i feel a bit daft for asking

Looks like my dads grandfather clock

Tho it has two hands and the minutes ticks / VERY NOISELY !!!!

Let alone noon or midnight chimes 🙀🙀🙀

I lived with that clock for 26yrs till moved out and got used to the hourly chime and slept well

I stayed a few nights after my mum died and the bonging drove me insane hour after hour during the night

If you really don’t want the clock then sure the museum would like esp of rare and only have a pic

We have a grandfather clock that's from about 1780, the tick is noisy and it bongs on the quarter hour. We haven't wound it whike the kids are small but will reinstate it shortly, you don't hear them after a couple of days. I think it's beautiful and a link to the past. We are in a Victorian house so im a bit sentimental about that kind of thing anyway.

I think the same as others, lend it to a museum. My dad is leaving me his classic car. I won't know what to do with it so it's going to a museum.

@titnomatani lol. It's a 'rural' clock. Made for a farm house probably. Some of them are very elaborate, yes. But not this one.

Funny reading about other folks loud bonging. Which ever bedroom it happens to be under is rendered unusable as a room to sleep in if it's running. When i was a kid it would always seem to bong right as a crucial bit of dialogue was on the telly. And in those days you couldn't pause/rewind Grin

We're having a massive amount of extension and building work done to the house right now. When it's all done i might think about having it in the hall.

I do feel better about it now thanks to this thread. wont have it running though

Wele if non of you like the clock stick it in the attic

TriciaH87 · 22/09/2019 20:15

Depends what it is. My grandad when he died put the house in his will stating the family member living in it would inherit it in full if they did not put it on the market and lived in it for 10 years paying all the bills. If it was sold before hand it was to be split into equal shares between the 4 children. Not exactly a can't sell but conditions in doing so. If its somethung like property where lawyers would be involved in the sale I imagine they could stop you selling it.

I think it's beautiful - you are very lucky. I'd grab it off you in a heartbeat. It would look lovely in my cottage, but the ceilings are only 7 ft tall.
