Aibu to ask - if you permanent work from home - where is your office

So- I have my own business and work from home. I currently work from my (admittedly very large) lounge. Have a desk which overlooks the garden etc.

Am about to move to a new home, and chances are I’ll end up using a bedroom as an office which I’ve never fancied. I’d previously worked at the kitchen table but not fancying going back to that,

Aibu to ask - if you have a home office - where is it and how do you find it?

Mine is downstairs, a purpose built study. I like the idea of one of those garden rooms but my garden is too small.

I’ve previously had an office that overtook the whole house (lounge ended up as office, tiny snug as lounge!) and also an outbuilding which we used for an office/workshop at another house. I liked being able to close the door on work, but it meant I didn’t get the benefit of eg putting a wash on while waiting for the kettle to boil, or being able to work while also looking after DCs (we used to put a baby monitor on if we had to work out there in the evenings but DS had night terrors and I do wonder if that’s why. Even if he didn’t know we weren’t in the house, he may have sensed it).

Best set up for me is definitely within the house.

TheBrockmans · 19/09/2019 23:09

I just work on my laptop in the living room because it is cosy. I can work elsewhere if children at home, but during the day I have the house to myself.

MoreThanJustANumber · 19/09/2019 23:10

I've got the biggest bedroom in the house as an office/craft room. I spend more time on it than I do in the bedroom, and the room I'm using as a bedroom has an en-suite and is still a good size, so it was an easy decision.

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:17

Ok am going to risk it (No judging the house - it’s what we can afford)... where would you put the office.. downstairs or upstairs

Previous owners of my house had one room kitted out as an office - it seemed superfluous at the time as I always had to work away. Fast forward to now and I am using it and DP has had to set up in the conservatory too.

FenellaMaxwell · 19/09/2019 23:22

In that house, definitely in the box room. Our house is a 3 bed and one bedroom is an office instead but the sofa in there is a sofa bed.

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:27

@fenella - I worry that I’ll feel a bit “imprisoned” in the box room. Have so far earmarked the second bedroom

In your house I’d use the smallest bedroom. It’s a very small bedroom but great for an office. Depends on if you need the bedroom to be a bedroom though!

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:29

Qi should say - it’s only me and dh

How often do you have guests?

If you work from home every day I'd put the office in the second bedroom. Set it up how you want it.

You should be able to squeeze a double sofa bed in the box room so as long as your guests are only there a night or two that would be fine

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 19/09/2019 23:32

I'd go for the small bedroom. It's bigger than the box room I use! My office is always a mess, but it's mine...desk, chair, monitor, keyboard and printer. And I door I can close on the mess and work. But as long as I have my email on my phone I'll never escape it Hmm

Cluelessbeetroot · 19/09/2019 23:32

Very jealous of the area you’re moving to OP, Blackheath is gorgeous, used to live there before we went all grown up and moved to the suburbs
I also wfh, got a desk and all the paperwork etc on designated shelves in the (fairly large) kitchen but I usually take the laptop on the comfy living room sofa

JAMMFYesPlease · 19/09/2019 23:32

I have a desk set up in the living room. I can see if anyone is coming to the door and because there's the most space (open plan loving room, dining room, kitchen)

My husband's desk is set up in our den (bedroom without a door upstairs).

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:33

At the moment we have a large two bed flat- but only ever have guests stay once or twice a year for only one or two nights so use an inflatable bed thingy.

I worry that the third bedrooms window is a bit high so won’t see out of it.

My husband has a shepherds hut for when he works from home.

OMG SamCam is that you? Grin

This is a shepherds hut

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:40

@Cluelessbeetroot ah it is a lovely area - though now we are about nearer the centre. But bet I’ll follow you out too (everyone goes to Sevenoaks or Tunbridge Wells in the end 😊).

OP posts:
Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:42

OMG the shepherds hut is not for me.. I need an office not a man cave

Chloemol · 19/09/2019 23:47

The third bedroom, which is a small single. Setup with desk, bookcases, space for printer etc. Love it as I can just stop, log off but leave everything out if I need to and shut the door so I can’t see it. Get a better view out of the window as well

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:48

How does he do any work there?

OP posts:
travailtotravel · 19/09/2019 23:50

Perfectly nice house. I'd take the 3rd bedroom tbh - get it set up well with a desk that fits properly and a good chair. Be nice and cosy in winter. Paint it light, mind and have good lighting.

Comefromaway · 19/09/2019 23:56

We converted the integral garage.

Officewhere · 19/09/2019 23:56

Hard to see in photos but the window in third bedroom is quite high... am worried I’d feel w bit caged in... that said maybe I’m being precious -she I worked in a “proper office “I had an internal thing that just looked over rows of other desks

Room with blue curtains. But £1750 a month on rent! My mortgage on my house ( six bed) is less than three times that.
I like the house though.
