About thinking to not help my DH get out of his overdraft?

We're applying for a mortgage and just discovered he's usually £500 into his overdraft. I have no idea how he got there in the first place but I can see a few things that I would simply cancel (like Now TV, XBox subscription, I really didn't realise he was still paying that one).

The problem is, I don't think paying it off would help him. I took some of his bills for a couple of months and yet again he's in his OD. I hate being in debt and only go into it when it's planned/manageable).

I'll have a chat with him, but obviously he's not a child.

Are you sure you want to tied to him with a mortgage? You sound financially incompatible.

Could I make a suggestion?

If you're applying for a mortgage, and yet you feel unable to jointly budget/jointly own such things as NOW TV, XBox etc, then it's going to get very tricky later on down the line.

I think it's fine to keep your money separate from each other in terms of where it's deposited. Yet when you look at household spend, you need to consider it both as joint expenditure, as it gets a bit tricky when one person goes off on their own and spends faster than the other, people can end up bearing heavier loads etc from their own personal income if you're ringfencing it as such.

What is the split of the bills in the house. It’s all well and good to be judgemental about his spending habits but if he’s paying all the bills and you’re just paying a few then you should step up to plug the gap.

I pay more of my fair share. Slot of his money go on snacks/nibbles and he has high commuting costs.
