Company Name badge with DoB displayed

I am being unreasonable to insist that I do not want my Date of Birth on my name badge for work, it already has my name, my position and my photo - surely that is enough?

inboxmayhem · 18/09/2019 11:44

Who says you have to have this?

steff13 · 18/09/2019 11:45

I need more information. What is the purpose of having it on there? Is it a public-facing role?

Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 11:46

Public facing - company have produced them already.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 18/09/2019 11:47

I would stick something over that bit unless they can provide a very good reason to need it.

Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 11:47

I mean the public will see me - I don't interact with them. I'm being deliberately vague, sorry.

Black marker pen should work (or tippex if it's white)

EdtheBear · 18/09/2019 11:48

Surely that contravenes Data Protection?

Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 11:49

Surely that contravenes Data Protection I wondered about that too?

Smelborp · 18/09/2019 11:49

No that’s weird. I would not comply with that.

23Squared · 18/09/2019 12:15

Why on earth would it be needed?! What was their reasoning?

JonSlow · 18/09/2019 12:16

What’s their reasoning?

WarshipWarrior · 18/09/2019 12:18

What's their reason? They must have one? Or is it just a gigantic oversight? In my large corporate company its first name only for fear of attacks/social media stalkers etc which there have been massive issues with in the past. So I'd not only cover the DOB but also my surname. Name badges are a stupid idea altogether in my opinion but no way would I be sharing with all the public in my job anything other than my first name.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 18/09/2019 12:18

That's not right. I can think of NO sufficient reason why an employee's date of birth should be displayed to the public and other employees. Under GDPR they need to have a lawful reason for use of your data - name and photo is reasonable for security and ID, date if birth they can jog on.

I'd use a white sticky label to cover just that.

Petrichor11 · 18/09/2019 12:18

Really can’t think of a legitimate reason why this would be needed! Differentiating over and under 18s is the only thing I can think of but wouldn’t need your full DOB just whether you were over 18. Have they told you why they’re doing this?

NearlyGranny · 18/09/2019 12:23

If anyone can see your name and d.o.b. they are a good chunk of the way to being able to impersonate you online! A little blob of blutack works wonders in this sort of situation. It rolls off for meetings without leaving a trace.

HR needs to be asked to explain this, though, urgently.

Biancadelrioisback · 18/09/2019 12:32

My old boss insisted on doing this as "the public deserve to know when they're dealing with someone under 30" Hmm
I refused to wear it unless he gave me a legitimate reason why the public needed to know.
He also insisted on including our sex (f/m) as "some of the women look quite manly".

He was fired.

Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 12:51

I'm new in the job and I'm not entirely sure why they think it's needed - someone has suggested that it's to show I'm not over 18.

OP posts:
Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 12:54

My concern is that from my name badge someone knows where I work, my full name, my job title and my date of birth - it feel like too much information - I'm worried about data security and identity fraud...no one else seems bothered by it.

OP posts:
LolaSmiles · 18/09/2019 13:00

There's no reason to show your date of birth at all.

If it's to show you're under 18 then I'm guessing there's certain parts of your job you can't do due to being under 18. Could they not so what supermarkets do and have a "under 18 worker" symbol showing you may need authorisation from someone for certain tasks.

I don't think they have a lawful reason to share that information.

EdtheBear · 18/09/2019 13:05

I know it's a MN thing but I'd def bring this up with HR.

If they have a need to show you are under 18, they could do it with a different coloured badge, a star, a U, any thing else they can think of they don't need to use your DOB on your badge.

Some companies are far too trusting and don't take Data Protection seriously. I've worked somewhere where everyone had access to everybody else's personal details, address, phone numbers, NI numbers, DOB. I deleted my info as I felt anybody could use it for credit. Nobody else seemed to see the issue.

Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 13:12

My friend says her sixth form ID badge has her Date of birth on it too!

OP posts:
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/09/2019 13:14

I assume a 6th formed would have one as age ID - but a work badge? The can’t think why this would be in any way appropriate.

AlwaysCheddar · 18/09/2019 13:19

Totally wrong. Put a sticker over it.

Tobetomorrow · 18/09/2019 13:21

I'm going to speak to my supervisor.

I was worried for my friend from a data security point of view too as she has to wear her badge when she is outside school - she doesn't seem to care.
