Like "chic" or like "shake"?

Twi different (American admittedly) pod casts have pronounced it differently to me!

“Shake”

LoseLooseLucy · 18/09/2019 09:06

Shake.

lumpy76 · 18/09/2019 09:06

I've always pronounced it "Shake"

Branleuse · 18/09/2019 09:06

Shake

TheQueef · 18/09/2019 09:06

Seek.
Like Sikh.

SnuggyBuggy · 18/09/2019 09:06

Like shake your booty although I have no idea if this is correct. That said the Fake Sheikh wouldn't have been called that if it didn't rhyme surely.

westcountrychicken · 18/09/2019 09:07

That's how I say it but they keep saying "chic", I didn't realise it was open to different pronunciations!

I live in the ME. It’s definitely “shake”

Branleuse · 18/09/2019 09:08

@snuggybuggy thats how I remember it. The frank zappa album, Sheikh yerbouti

Bloodybridget · 18/09/2019 09:09

Shake. It's never pronounced any other way on the news. Maybe with a slight "e" sound on the vowel rather than as in milkshake IYSWIM - shorter rather than long "a" .

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 18/09/2019 09:09

Shake like shake your booty.

MissMoiselle · 18/09/2019 09:11

"Shake" is the acceptable pronunciation. If you want to say it properly, the "kh" sound at the end is a throaty "rr"

SnuggyBuggy · 18/09/2019 09:12

I just remember DH and his friend having a serious conversation about the Fake Sheikh and me and my other friend taking the opportunity to sing Shake Your Booty and have a bit of a dance in the street Blush

Bellsofstclements · 18/09/2019 09:13

Shake.

CaptainObviousTwo · 18/09/2019 09:14

Definitely Shake.
I used to work for several middle Eastern royal families, it's definitely Shake.

Courtney555 · 18/09/2019 09:18

One of our friends is a sheikh. He's very flamboyant and known for silly and extravagant purchases has (affectionately) earned the nick name "Sheikh-Your-Wallet". He refers to himself as it sometimes. It's definitely Shake. You can't Chic-Your-Wallet Grin

Damntheman · 18/09/2019 11:13

... I was today years old when I learned this :o holy crap.

bridgetreilly · 18/09/2019 11:15

Shake in the UK, Chic in the US. They say all kinds of stuff differently there...

IAmALazyArse · 18/09/2019 11:16

Shake as in milk shake but with the 'kh' noise.

LightDrizzle · 18/09/2019 11:16

Shake.
I'm 49 and have never met one. I've only ever heard it pronounced "Shake", but that's on U.K. media or in conversation with other people in the U.K.

AloeVeraLynn · 18/09/2019 11:18

Why would you say seek as in Sikh??! Bizarre!

I say shake. Not sure about US.

TheQueef · 18/09/2019 11:18

So is it
Sikh - seek
Sheikh - shake
British pronunciation?

Autumn101 · 18/09/2019 11:19

Lived in 2 ME countries - most definitely Shake

FindaPenny · 18/09/2019 11:21

It's sort of like a breathy shake... Sort of like shay-khh

SpoonBlender · 18/09/2019 11:22

Shake.

Americans americanise a lot of pronunciation of foreign words. "Click" for clique, "nitch" for niche, "erbs" for herbs of course and my brain is fried so that's all I can think of straight up.
