To be scared of flying but put up with it for holidays

I’m absolutely terrified of flying, I do it because we love having a foreign holiday and I don’t want my family to be affected.
Am in being unreasonable ...

Are there any Air Crew on here that can put my fear at ease.

And yes I realise that I AM being unreasonable.

I am posting purely to tell you I am terrified of flying I am a nervous wreck the minute the wheels leave the run way until they land again

Well done for managing. I'm a wreck even doped up with diazepam so we don't fly. Fortunately we've found a holiday we love in the UK!

BA do an excellent Fear of Flying course. Worth a go.

Cabin crew wouldn’t risk their lives for the relatively low pay they receive! It’s safer than driving your car.

WhatWhyWhen · 17/09/2019 23:54

I was terrified of flying after being on one with engine failure (it landed safely obviously as they usually do!).

But I wanted holidays and to work internationally. I’ve now done probably 6 long haul and short haul over the last year and fly again Thursday.

I’m scared now, but do you know what it gets easier each time and I’ve sort of tries to develop a “what will be attitude”.

I was beaten and raped last year and he could have very easily killed me, by friend had a heart attack at 35. Something will get you in the end, so do things you enjoy at least! But maudlin but it works!

On practical tips downloaded movies and some chill out songs, headphones in, big glass of wine and just switch off.

Hi

YANBU at all. Flying can be scary, I used to be petrified but cope due to constantly flying due to work hence it's become my norm. Accept that isn't the case for everyone though.
Others have mentioned the fear of flying courses and from speaking to people they're effective at allaying fears xx

I used to work in aviation, for a major U.K. carrier. Until last year, I was quick to reassure people that flying was very, very safe indeed and that there was really nothing to worry about. I would cite statistics which compared the number of people killed on commercial flights (almost none) to the numbers killed on the roads (tens of thousands). I would reassure people that they were much safer flying than they were driving to the airport.

Then, two brand new Boeing 737-Max aircraft crashed with no survivors due to a combination of software faults in the avionic systems and poor pilot training. The manufacturer’s negligence was responsible for the loss of hundreds of lives. The entire fleet of these aircraft were grounded, and are still grounded today. These events should never happen. The crashes exposed very serious problems with the way modern aircraft are designed and certified. Boeing cut corners to maximise profits.

I still fly regularly, but the reality is that flying isn’t as safe as we all thought it was.

I’m sorry if my post isn’t exactly reassuring, OP, but sadly it is the truth.

My DH refused to fly for years, i got so sick of waiting for him over the years to at least try, that I buggered off on my own for a few days.
When I came back, he said he didn't realise it was that important to me, and said he'd go away and would fly the next time a holiday time came around.
He was fine, and said he wished he'd done it years ago. Flying is a fear, I get it.

But you're more likely to die in childbirth than with flying, yet women still want to have babies. Still get in cars, still cross roads, etc

But it’s the opposite of what the OP asked for and needs Confused

I’m ex cabin crew, and I flew for fifteen years. Never had an emergency in that time, rarely any drunk passengers either.
I recently flew, and was surprised at looking around the cabin how many people are actually scared of flying. I had a chap next to me terrified as we were coming into land we had thermals as it was warm the plane was doing a wave like motion turbulence. Every bump the chap was on edge.
What is your ultimate fear op?

Charles11 · 18/09/2019 00:35

Do you know how many planes are in the air at any given time?
8 000 to 20 000. That blew my mind.
And it’s very rare that anything bad will happen.

I used to be until we flew back from Greece through a thunderstorm and it was a really bumpy flight .People being sick , asthma attacks .But bizarrely it cured my fear of flying .We went to Italy last month and i really enjoyed the flight even the odd bit of turbulence.
