I’m not into killing things (even spiders), but after reading an article this week about false widows & the issues that a bite from one can cause I’ve been a bit panicky.

Queue this little fella running across my living room floor 😳 Is it a false widow?! AIBU in thinking if I find another I might have to kill it?

I fee all itchy 😐

That’s just a regular old house spider!

ratatata · 17/09/2019 21:55

Just a normal spider lol nothing to worry about. Please don’t kill it!

DoctorAllcome · 17/09/2019 22:04

Hard to tell with spotty glass.
But if it’s brown, long legged and slightly hairy, it’s a regular house spider. Fall is their mating season so lots of males start running about looking for a female. That’s when you are most likely to surprise them on the stairs or see them run across your carpet. They are fast too.

A false widow is shiny and smaller and also not much to worry about. It has a tan hourglass on its back.

WelshMoth · 17/09/2019 22:05

It's your hairy 8 legged little friend that scoffs any nasties you may have lurking.

Let it go!

Xitt · 17/09/2019 22:06

OP please don’t worry about false widow spider bites. They’re rare and usually no more serious than a bee sting. The freak occurrences of serious injury result from an allergic reaction or a secondary bacterial infection of the bite (which can occur with any type of injury not just a bite).

SirVixofVixHall · 17/09/2019 22:09

No, not a false widow, a house spider. Harmless.
The articles about false widows are wildly inaccurate for a start.

SaveKevin · 17/09/2019 22:09

False widows have been around in the uk since Victorian times. They are not dangerous.

Yes looks like a house spider to me. News said there are loads this year due to rain and heat levels. I’ve had at least 6 potter over various floors in our house recently. They sod off eventually.

Oh thank god 😂 don’t worry... I set him/her free ages ago! Also genuinely thought that everyone had this severe reaction from a false widow bite ffs 😂... must educate myself further, before having anxiety for a week over killer spider

I actually saw a false widow in our school recently - properly had a skull pattern on its abdomen. It was really interesting! Scariest spider I ever saw in a house I later discovered was a woodlouse eating one - massive, red fangs and legs, with a pale abdomen. But totally harmless... unless you’re a woodlouse.

If you are on twitter, follow British Spiders, they are good At debunking all the nonsense in the press about “spider invasions” etc.

I once opened a kitchen wall cupboard door to find one of those bastard big house spiders on the inside of the door right next to my face. Gave me a right fright. I always check now.
