Can I ask are you planning to take your kids out of school, if so how old are they and what part of the country do you live in? Interested to see if certain areas more represented than others!

Bookworm4 · 17/09/2019 19:46

Yes, Edinburgh

cheesesoftheworld · 17/09/2019 19:47

definitely not: rural Lancashire ( not sure why location matters)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/09/2019 19:48

mummagirl · 17/09/2019 19:49

My 17 year old daughter asked me yesterday if she could go to the March in London on Friday.

I’m really conflicted. On the one hand, I genuinely believe that climate change is the biggest threat facing my children’s generation. So, she should march and try to change government policies.

On the other hand, she is in her final A level year and I’m reluctant to let her miss vital lessons. Even if I’m right about the climate change issue, and everything is going to pot, she needs to do well in her exams as the rich will fare much better in a distopian future Sad.

Also, I have the sort of job where fines for allowing my child to have unauthorised absences could be pretty disastrous for me.

As I said, I’m conflicted!

littledrummergirl · 17/09/2019 20:00

Nope. She went last year as it was a good excuse to skip school. After researching the organisation through the summer she has decided that she doesn't want to become indoctrinated into this cult. She is also in her gcse years and understands the value of her education and how lucky she is to be in a country that allows her to have one.

FallenMadonnawiththeBadBoobies · 17/09/2019 20:02

Cult? Seriously? Do you not consider climate change to be a serious threat?

Camomila · 17/09/2019 20:04

I really wanted to take DS 3.5 out of nursery for the afternoon and go but I'm too poorly atm for a big walk (hyperemisis)

Live in Brighton.

cheesesoftheworld · 17/09/2019 20:32

camomila do you really think a 3 year old will have a clue what's going on?

Drabarni · 17/09/2019 20:34

Nope, GCSE's and one early one, so definitely not.
We are Manchester. Not a place for kids when they should be in school.

Bookworm4 · 17/09/2019 20:39

One day won’t result in exam disaster, I feel a bit sorry for these kids where there’s no life but parents obsessing over exam results.

RoseDog · 17/09/2019 20:40

My DS is 14 and in S3 and his school is authorising an absence for Friday if pupils bring in a permission slip, I never even knew there was a climate change protest until we got a message on the school app!

My DS goes to a school in an area that pupils would not care one bit about climate change so I'm not sure what the thinking is.

My DS will be off though but for a different reason, he says no one is going in on Friday!

stoneysongs · 17/09/2019 20:41

Yes DD13 is going to the Cardiff one. She has been before and is going with friends.

dowehaveastalker · 17/09/2019 20:48

No.

Jenniferturkington · 17/09/2019 20:52

Absolutely. My dd (10) is very keen to do it so we will support her. In fact my dh’s company is striking so he will accompany her. My ds (12) is not going this time but the school are fully supportive of students who want to.
We are in Brighton.

KizzyWayfarer · 17/09/2019 21:02

I’m not taking my children out of school, they are both in primary, but I’m going to the London rally. They’ve invited all adults along to support and it is going to be a big global thing (in Australia over 1000 businesses have pledged to give workers time off)
While the teenagers are pretty spot on about the existential global crisis they’re less sharp (at least in London) on telling people where to be and when. So if you can get time off, it’s Millbank, neat Parliament, 11-3.
