To ask about this pigeon

I was talking my DS to school about twenty minutes ago

And I TRIPPED OVER A PIGEON. should I sue him

It looks pretty pretty poorly and had waddled to the side near the school fence, it’s going to be a pretty busy foot path at pick up time and I feel like I should help.

Do I call the RSPCA? Do they deal with pigeons? Do I just leave it and hope for the best?

Are you sure it's not a baby that fell out the nest? I normally phone the local vets and ask them for advice.

Timeforachangeofusername99 · 17/09/2019 12:52

Google I'd you have a wildlife rescue near you, someone may be able to come and see if it's a fledgling or if its possibly been hurt. Ask on Facebook if you cant find anywhere, someone is bound to know someone who can help

leiaskye · 17/09/2019 12:52

I wouldn’t bother the RSPCA with this.

I took an injured pigeon to my vets the other week. They put it to sleep as it had been attacked by, probably, a cat.

CrystalShark · 17/09/2019 12:53

Go find him with a cardboard box and ring around a few local vets asking if you can bring him in.

I’ve done that maybe 5-6 times over the years and never been turned down. A couple of times it has ended with the pigeon dying anyway but mostly they were stunned from being clipped by a car or something and after being able to recover in a safe place away from cats/foxes/people for a day or two were released in good health :)

Never been charged either, though I’ve always offered to pay.

ThatLibraryMiss · 17/09/2019 12:54

If it's not a baby, pick it up and pop it in a shoe box (punch some holes for air) so it's dark, then drop it at the vet's. They'll fix it if it's fixable or euthanise it if it isn't. Either way, it'll be comfortable.

mynellie · 17/09/2019 13:01

If it has a ring on its leg contact the union that the owner belongs to , My husband runs a pigeon union and we are always getting calls about found birds

UnlawfulBananaPeeler · 17/09/2019 13:01

I’ve just gone out with a towel and popped him and a box.
He’s not a baby he’s very big .
I don’t have a car today so I’m at a loss of what to do with him now but he’s out of harms way. He’s in my shed because I’ve got a dog I’m going to have to hope he’s ok until my partner gets home and we can take him to the vets

Put some food and water in the box for now, he’ll probably appreciate the calm dark peace for a bit. Ring some vets so you have one expecting him for when you have access to the car :) and well done. Whatever the outcome, you’ve done your best to help and not ignored him and even if it doesn’t end well the vets usually say it was better for them to have peace and quiet or be put to sleep than have ended up being kicked by some kid or mauled by a dog. You’ve given him the best chance of being taken care of. I wish everyone was like you xx

CrystalShark · 17/09/2019 13:04

Is the shed warm enough btw? If not could you pop him in a room upstairs with the door shut away from the dog? Make sure the box has plenty of air holes.

UnlawfulBananaPeeler · 17/09/2019 13:10

It’s warm here today so he should be ok. I left the towel folded in the bottom as well.
My dads going to come and get him in an hour , there’s a walk in vets in town so he can be dropped off there. He’s not looking not great though Sad

Thank you for looking after him, even if he doesn't make it. So many people walk past without a thought.

Kolo · 17/09/2019 18:02

That is a nice thing to do. Really pleased you took the time to help him.

simonisnotme · 17/09/2019 18:05

at least you have helped him/her its better for it either way ie treated/euthanised

Spanielmadness · 17/09/2019 18:08

If i find a pigeon fallen from the nest, I wrap it so it’s calm, take it home and then quickly dispatch it and after freezing for 3 weeks to kill parasites, feed it to my dog. Better that it’s death has a use I think.

Xitt · 17/09/2019 18:09

Poor little thing. Glad you picked him up, I hope the vet can fix him. Sadly the last time I did this the bird died in the box before we got to the vet.

UnlawfulBananaPeeler · 17/09/2019 20:27

He got to the vets. My neighbors happened to see me pick him up and knew of a vet that does all she can to save birds , he said he took some baby starlings to her that unfortunately their cat had and the vet hand reared 3 of them !

She said she’d look after him but she didn’t look optimistic 😕 poor thing.

And I can safely say ‘dispatching’ and freezing him for my dogs didn’t even cross my mind Confused

Spanielmadness Are you a Victorian?

Onthetrain75 · 17/09/2019 21:01

Thank you for looking after this pigeon. I’m always finding lost or injured animals, it’s such a nightmare finding places to take them sometimes. Well done for caring. No animal should be left suffering.
