Is it 24 or 48 hours after sickness?

Hi all, there is a bug going around my kids school 🤢 hoping he will miss it.

I’ve always been led to believe you should
Keep children off for 48 hours after symptoms stop, that’s what I’ve always done anyway.

A friends kids have the bug and she says it’s 24 hours and will be sending them back after 24 hours. I’m sure if the school know it’s only been 24 hours they won’t be impressed?

I cannot find anything on the schools website. It would be a bit off if I went in and asked because my kids don’t have the bug.

24 or 48 hours?? I know this may vary between schools but what is the norm?

I’m hoping the school will send guidance letters home as the children are dropping like flies. Still hoping mine will miss it but I doubt it!!

It's 48 hours after last symptoms subside as far as I know xx

JacquesHammer · 16/09/2019 14:09

NHS recommendation is 48 hours.

i think its 48 hrs d and v (or either), because although you feel better, the bugs are still in you a bit and take the body longer to finally get rid of!

Shplot · 16/09/2019 14:12

Always 48, if she’s called in sick today the school will probably send the child home tomorrow

Chitarra · 16/09/2019 14:12

I think officially it's 48 hours. However, in reality, if a child has been absolutely fine for the last 24 hours I think a lot of parents would send them in rather than waiting for another day! Luckily my DC are hardly ever sick so I haven't had to worry about this.

Andonandonan · 16/09/2019 14:14

Hmmm our school is only 24 and it doesn’t seem to have any worse levels of sickness than places I’ve worked with the 48 hr rule.

I tend to stick to 48 though in terms of socialising etc as no one wants to pass on / catch a sickness bug!

Ds school won't allow pupils to even be off for 24 hours after a d & v bug, there have been episodes of pupils throwing up in lessons, they are sent to the medical room for an hour & then back in to school. It's stupid & means that more often than not children are bringing bugs home more often, I suffer from a very low immune system due to having ME & I have lost count of the number of bugs I have caught that ds has brought home from school despite hand washing & insisting on ds washing his hands as soon as he comes home from school & before meals as well as the usual hand washing after using the toilet.

our school says 24 hours. Check the school's own policy.

sanityisamyth · 16/09/2019 14:16

48 hours for school, but 2 weeks for swimming.

DobbyLovesSocks · 16/09/2019 14:16

NHS guidance is 48 hours and it is certainly that at work ( I work in the NHS) but my DS school is 24 hours. Not sure if that is for attendance purposes?

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 16/09/2019 14:21

Dds school say 24 hours. It should be 48 hours really but thanks to the focus on attendance figures...

Hmmmmminteresting · 16/09/2019 14:25

Our nursery is 48hrs however when 4 of the staff were recently off with d&v the same week, strangely they were back in the next day! Slightly miffed about that, especially when i have to pay for the extra day my DC had off when he had been perfectly fine!

Windydaysuponus · 16/09/2019 14:29

For dc in our primary its 48 hours. Secondary it's 24.
Kept dd 12 off the second day and a school attendance officer appeared at 9 am to ask why my dd only had 98 % attendance!.
When I rang to enquire about it - all my dc have 100 % every term - leg hanging off before I let them stay home - the teacher said well we know she was ill yesterday as she was sent home but today she could be under a patio!
Shock

Over zealous or what?

For dd’s school it’s 48 hours. For my work (not medical) it’s 72 hours.
