To ask which supermarket is the best for own brand stuff?

Been shopping in Lidl the last few months. However, I'm finding one is getting really bad and prices are going up. Used to find it really good, so didn't mind dragging young baby along but now it doesn't feel worth the hassle of fighting with the till system with fussy baby in sling. Our local Aldi is shite and I hate Morrisons.

Decided to go back to supermarket delivery. Which is the best for own brand items? We cook most meals from scratch and eat lost of fresh foods such vegetables, fruit, cheese, eggs, etc. Only packaged stuff we tend to get is stuff like cereals, snacks for toddler, occasional biscuits etc. Meat is from local butchers. Not snobby about buying value items, as long as they're decent.

If you buy mostly own brand, where do you think is the best quality?

Another for Sainsburys here. Plus spend a certain amount and each time you get money off. Love them!

I find Waitrose ready meals very disappointing. Iceland is better than I was expecting; their pizzas are especially good.

Lellikelly26 · 15/09/2019 18:08

Morrison’s is best for value and quality. I alternate between them and Sainsbury’s
I have noticed Aldi are more expensive now and it’s not worth it as I prefer the standard supermarkets

SmallPinkBear · 15/09/2019 18:08

Unhelpful I know but I think they are all good at different things. I have midweek delivery passes with Sainsbury’s and Tesco so I can get the bits I want from each and take advantage of branded offers... (I don’t get 2 deliveries each week, I look to see what I need and what is on offer)

Basketofkittens · 15/09/2019 18:15

Waitrose Essential really isn’t expensive.

Frouby · 15/09/2019 18:22

Op I used to hate morrisons. Found it expensive, all the offers were on crap like mega bags of crisps and ridiculous bakery products.

However I started shopping there again earlier in the year when I fell out with Tesco again and find it good value and they are quite ethical. The fish and butchers counters are good, the fruit and veg is good and reasonably priced and their own brands are really good as well.

Plus they have a lovely selection of cream cakes. For that alone, they are better than Tesco.

Lex234 · 15/09/2019 18:23

Market is first preference for me for fruit, veg and meat. I like Morrisons but the layout of the shop and narrow aisles drives me insane. I do online shops with Asda for tins/cupboard staples. I find Tesco really expensive, especially meat.

serenoa · 15/09/2019 19:16

Pfft! Waitrose really isn't for the rich, it's an urban myth. I'm a retired woman on state pension, an industrial pension and disability benefits. Smile

I buy pretty much the same as you, OP, except I don't have to cater for children any more. I buy a little meat from Waitrose but most of it is from a good butcher who services smaller farms raising traditional breeds by traditional methods.

Isn't there a website somewhere where you can input your shopping list and compare supermarket prices against that? I must look into that.

Serin · 15/09/2019 19:24

Sorry, it's Morrisons for me too.
Love their fish counter and all the basics are great value.
Went off Aldi when they started pratting around with their flour. Couldn't get the Yorkshire puds to rise for weeks and scones were like lead. Switched to other flours and baking was back yo usual!
I will never forgive them.

Stravapalava · 15/09/2019 19:26

The only own branded thing I don't like at Morrisons is the ketchup. Too thin and acidic. Apart from that, everything else is fine. DC love the Tesco own brand ketchup and I think everything else is fine!

PickAChew · 15/09/2019 19:34

Between sainsburys, markses, waitrose and coop. Some of them do some things better than others. I rate sainsburys meat free ready meals over markses and waitrose, for example, at about 2/3 of the price. I'm finding sainsburys the best for fruit and veg, lately, too, again much cheaper. Love the coop Irresistible range which is handy, since we have 2 stores on outlr doorstep.

I love Morrisons bread, mind, and their meat is good for its price point.

funinthesun19 · 15/09/2019 19:35

Morrison’s.

Aldi is shit. I know people rave about it, but it is shit. Well off people make me laugh with their obsession with Aldi. It’s like, why would you buy shite when you have the money to buy good quality stuff?

BackforGood · 15/09/2019 20:15

Well, I'm going to be equally unhelpful and say that Aldi is better than Morrisons, Sainsburys and Tesco (haven't tried Waitrose) Grin

Why do you think your Aldi is so bad?

WineOclock2019 · 15/09/2019 20:20

Definitely Tesco, like a previous poster said. There newish selections of non branded are fantastic.
Stockwells tins beans/soups ect mostly tins around 20p Mark.
Hearty Food Company
Ms. Molly's cakes ect
Boswell range...Diced beef perfect for stews/bourguignon £2.50 for 400G..
No complaints for any of the items brought from the ranges Tesco now supply and brought our overall cost down.
That and having the advantage of regular coupons, £12 off £80 shop, fuel vouchers, and Clubcard points is a big incentive.
Recently found asda/Aldi are gradually becoming more expensive, but quality of fresh fruit/veg is not to the higher standards that Tesco are for same price. Aldi spuds seem to last couple of days before becoming rotten ect.
Will definitely be doing the main delivery order from Tesco in future

MittsMajuna · 15/09/2019 20:22

Morrisons.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 15/09/2019 20:23

Search for Mike Jeavons on YouTube. He's done "a week on" of all the major supermarkets' own brand stuff and it's a pretty easy way to get a quick glimpse at the range and the quality.

Ohflippineck · 15/09/2019 20:23

Aldi specially selected things are good.

Span1elsRock · 15/09/2019 20:25

We shop with either Waitrose or Ocado. Waitrose used to be the clear winner (we use lots of their essentials stuff) but to be fair, Ocado have really improved over the last few years in terms of own brand quality. I really like that their stuff lasts so well as it hasn't been on display in store, it comes straight from the warehouse. Most fruit/veg lasts a few weeks if not longer at times. I've tried Aldi/Lidl a few times but nothing lasts very well and some of the quality is questionable.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 16/09/2019 08:53

Thanks all. Perhaps I'll give Morrisons another try. Used to shop there regularly as it was in walking distance in our old flat and we used to go there most days (before children) as it was convenient but I never really liked it there (was just closest to get Chocolate and wine Grin ).

Ocado have recently started delivering and we do have a voucher. Tesco seem to piss about with stock and suddenly stop stocking some of our favourite things and never had it available. Will try Ocado, Sainsbury's and Morrisons and see which we like. Cheers
