On another thread regarding food intake for a child, quite a few posters were certain that cornflakes are not breakfast. Porridge or eggs: acceptable. Bowl of cornflakes: not on your nelly! Poor little mite will be starving by lunchtime!

My children regularly have cornflakes or Rice Krispies for breakfast....am I wrong in letting them continue to do so? Does anyone else think it’s a bit bonkers to declare breakfast cereal isn’t a proper breakfast?!

Cornflakes or Rice Crispies are fine for breakfast.

My DS2 doesn't even eat breakfast and when he was little it was a constant battle as he is never hungry after waking up.. He's 17 now.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/09/2019 13:01

If I had corn flakes or rice crispies for breakfast, I'm hungry again before I get to work. That's why I don't see those sorts of cereals as food, but porridge doesn't work for me either.

Vgbeat · 15/09/2019 13:05

I was reading that thread last night and definitely understand the obesity crisis now after saying how much some of them eat. I think Cereal is an acceptable breakfast ok it's a bit high in sugar but a balanced diet I don't see the problem and it has a lot of vitamins in. My daughter has either cereal, toast or fruit and yogurt for breakfast and she is fine until break she doesn't collapse with hunger in the 2 and half hours.

Scienceforthewin · 15/09/2019 13:17

If you feed your child cornflakes for breakfast and an hour later they are starving it's not enough. If your child is fine, it's fine.

lazylinguist · 15/09/2019 13:24

If I have cereal for breakfast, a couple of hours later I quite literally feel more hungry than if I'd had no breakfast at all. A refined carby/sugary breakfast seems to just kick my apperite into action for the day, but without actually filling me up. I don't have cereal in the house. My dc usually have toast and peanut butter, or fruit.

Siameasy · 15/09/2019 13:28

I don’t find cereal much good in that high sugar high starch foods seem to make me feel hungrier than I was to start with. And porridge makes me fall asleep.
But if that doesn’t happen then it’s ok. Think it depends on your metabolism

ThirstyGhost · 15/09/2019 13:38

Can only speak for myself and my kids, but it doesn't fill them up like porridge does. I find porridge is the only cereal-type breakfast that fills me up and also it was recommended to me by my GP when I was recovering from PND - something to do with slow release energy.

But other than that if I give the kids and myself scrambled egg on toast or any kind of eggy breakfast that definitely fills us up for longest.

It's trial and error though isn't it. If you're giving a kid a bowl of rice krispies and they're hungry again within the hour it's not working for them is it.

Divebar · 15/09/2019 13:58

My DD goes to a breakfast club and it annoys me no end that all that’s on offer is cereal and white bread toast. Not even porridge in winter. Generally speaking I think there’s an over reliance on cereals - particularly if you have a sandwich for lunch and something like pasta for dinner. A better breakfast would be eggs or granary toast with low sugar peanut butter

Jent13c · 15/09/2019 13:58

It depends on your kid. My kid (2) decides what he wants, porridge definitely keeps him full for longer. He loves a slow morning and long leisurely breakfast and would often have weetabix, fruit and toast and whatever else he could get his hands on but only ever eats his 3 meals and never asks for snacks. My niece and nephew are the opposite and barely finish a slice of toast in the morning but would always have snacks between meals.

Ohyesiam · 15/09/2019 14:05

But op
It’s only breakfast cereal because that’s what the manufacturers call it. They saw a gap in the market at some point, advertised it heavily, and now its in our minds as acceptable for a kids breakfast.
Kids , and adults too actually stay fuller for longer if they have either protein or a slow release carb.
Sugar is the enemy because it raises your insulin , which is produced and does a great job of lowering your blood sugar to what it was before you ate. This signals to you’re body that you’re hungry again. That’s part of why it’s the cause of the obesity crisis.

Wineiscooling · 15/09/2019 14:13

Mine have cereal. Either shreddies, special k or Weetabix. I didn't realize this makes me a terrible mother! Neither of mine have complained of hunger!
I grew up cereal for breakfast. Don't think I was ever offered anything else.
Neither me or my kids are obese either.

easyandy101 · 15/09/2019 15:24

I can't do porridge for breakfast without a significant amount of protein, it makes me murderously hungry

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2019 15:34

Bleurgh I hate porridge, it's horrible. Breakfast before work/school has to consist of not getting all the pots and pans out too.

Laura221 · 15/09/2019 15:40

What?! Mine have weetabix every morning. Occasionally they have toast at the weekend. My 5 year old only manages 1 weetabix too. Just ignore it. My kids are healthy and full. Also I'm not faffing around making some tedious breakfast to make other parents think I'm doing a good job.

CharityConundrum · 15/09/2019 15:40

Mine have cereal for breakfast - they both love weetabix and the milk they have with it accounts for the protein which people always seem to bemoan when talking about cereal for breakfast. Chocolate covered air puffs are probably not ideal as the main part of any meal, but carbs and protein in any form is probably going to fill you up reasonably well surely?

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 15/09/2019 15:47

You have to take Mumsnet with a pinch of salt ... of course a bowl of cornflakes is fine for your kids, it's fortified with vitamins and accompanied by milk is 'fine'.

Of course hard boiled eggs and a kale smoothie would be preferable but this is the real world!

Tilltheendoftheline · 15/09/2019 15:50

My son has toast. Takes a snack for morning break, his lunch and tra at after school club.

He is fine and not hungry. He wouldnt eat porridge or eggs for breakfast. I couldnt face that for breakfast either tbh.

Qwerty19 · 15/09/2019 15:52

Only thing I find. Filling is toast.
Cereal not so much.. The kids like cheerios but have fruit too.

Atalune · 15/09/2019 15:56

We have been sold the idea that cereal is good for us. The reality is that is cheap sugary stuff that fills for a short time.

The idea of cereals as a magic breakfast and great start to the day is advertising.

milliefiori · 15/09/2019 16:02

It's absolutely fine if it works for you and your children. We all grew up on it and we weren't murderously hungry by lunchtime. I know some people believe high protein is the best way to start the day but my stomach turns at the thought of low carb high protein. Different metabolisms suit different diets.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 15/09/2019 16:06

I grew up having a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast.

I read out the OP about the child’s food intake at childminders to my family ... they were all quite shocked at the amount of food leaving the child hungry.

Yesterday the four of us (me, DH, DD21, DS16) spent the day together so I know exactly what we all ate. DH and I had buttered toast for breakfast (one slice for me, two for DH). DD had cornflakes, DS had weetabix. No mid morning snack. Lunch was sandwiches, DS had one round of cheese, rest of us each had one round of ham, salad and mayo. DS had a chocolate mini roll. DD & DH had a packet of salt and vinegar crisps each. Mid afternoon we picked apples and shared a couple of them (cut up) for quality control purposes 😉. As we’d been so busy in the garden all day we ordered an Indian take away, two main dishes, one rice, two naan breads between the four of us but it didn’t all go as we were all stuffed.

Basically adults ate less than the child in the post about food intake!

I’m a bit heavier than I should be but the other three are all a healthy size.

lazylinguist · 15/09/2019 17:37

But op It’s only breakfast cereal because that’s what the manufacturers call it.

Exactly- and you know who coined the expression 'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day'? Mr Kellogg!

DerbyshireOatcake · 15/09/2019 17:40

@Ohyesiam and @Atalune have it bang on.

lljkk · 15/09/2019 17:41

DH has a bowl of cornflakes before 80 mile cycle rides.
Ok, he does stop at the caff en route, and might bring gels, energy drink, nana & flapjacks. And the ride might well be more like 175 miles.
The cornflakes start him out fine, anyway.

swingofthings · 15/09/2019 17:41

Some kids are starving in the morning, some are not, and that remains as adults. My OH needs a large breakfast or he isn't functioning, but has a small lunch. I don't like breakfast but will have brunch at 11am.

My kids are as dissimilar with a big breakfaster and an on strike breakfaster. Both are healthy teenagers now.
