I know it's not really an aibu, sorry, posting for traffic I suppose.
My Dh has insanely bad toothache. He has taken all available painkillers, in prescribed doses but they were not his prescription Confused. He can't get an appointment for emergency dentist until tomorrow morning and has been in agony for about 20 hours now.
What can we do? I called nhs direct, they basically told me that local a&e doesn't have a dentist so not much can be done.
He has taken cocodamol (sp?) and naproxen, neither has helped, he is crying in pain (he's not a cryer), should we go to a&e with the hope of stronger pain relief? What could the give other than what he's had? I can't face sitting in a&e for hours only to be given the same pain killers we already have. Oh and will telling them he's been taking someone else's prescription painkillers be a problem?? Confused
Please give me some hope, 20+ hours is pushing the limits of my sympathy Blush

I developed an abscess on a Sunday so had to wait until Monday for an emergency appt. A pharmacist friend recommended the paramol that comes in a black box. I've recommended it to others with extreme pain and it got great reviews as the only thing that touched the pain.

HairyFloppins · 14/09/2019 20:23

I have just been suffering with a dying tooth that was absolute agony. The only thing that helped a teeny tiny bit was orajel, sleeping upright.

Also ice cold water next to the door, I done this two whole nights. This might not help though, it depends on the problem.

Toothache is the absolute pits OP.

HairyFloppins · 14/09/2019 20:24

That should say ice cold water next to the tooth not the door!!

Mylittlepony374 · 14/09/2019 20:28

Clove Oil if you can get it. Health food stores usually. Some chemists. Hold it on cottonwool in tooth. I've heard it's what dentists used before anaesthetic. Not sure if that's true but has saved me once before.

Other than that can't help sorry, not sure if A&E would give more pain relief but might be worth the try if all else fails.

Mylittlepony374 · 14/09/2019 20:30

Or do you have Night Nurse where you are? It's a cold remedy from Chemist with paracetamol& other drugs that make you sleep. Might be worth a try.

TwattingDog · 14/09/2019 20:34

Paramol from the chemist is the strongest thing he can buy OTC. It's dihydracodeine, so better than co-codamol.

Tell him to make sure he splits the medication, so he's constantly topping up - so say codein at 2000hrs, take the naproxen at 2200hrs. Also, set an alarm in the night to take more pain relief - never let it all work out of his system.

Work out the max doses, and spread them out across the day and night.

I was once taken to A&E for an abscess that spread into my face. No treatment, just given a stronger prescription of co-codamol.

Clove oil

Don't go to A and E. They wont do anything. I have a lot of sympathy having had 2 abscesses and losing both teeth.
I would rather go through childbirth again than that pain.
I used clove oil and swished salt water around in my mouth trying to swill the affected area. Oragel too. If you have soluble aspirin it might ease it.
In my experience only the dentist s antibiotics and getting the damned teeth out helped.
I say A and E is useless as i once waited there 3 hours on a sunday with dd when she had an abscess and all they gave was stupid paracetamol and said see your dentist.

FirstTimeToddlerMum · 14/09/2019 20:48

I had an infected tooth 5 weeks after giving birth (inc a severe tear) and can honestly say I'd have preferred to give birth 10 times over.

Orajel , clove oil and every painkiller you can think of didn't touch it. I did end up in A&E after taking far too many painkillers I started to feel like I was intoxicated ( so bloody stupid of me , can't believe I was this irresponsible but I was in so much pain - wasn't breastfeeding ) they couldn't take it out as there was no max surgeon or dentist available but did give me oramorph and advised I take it along side paracetamol and ibuprofen , that along with mixing clove oil and orajel gave me some relief (didn't take it away but made it bearable)

I'm obviously only saying what helped me not advising you to do that and I know that you shouldn't go to A&E for things like that but honestly I would have done just about anything to be out of that pain.

Google the acupressure point for toothache and press and hold that. I think it’s between where the thumb joins the palm next to that thin bit of skin before the first finger starts. Can’t remember where or which hand. Google.

Cold water.

Hot water.

Not much else I can think of, sorry OP.
If they can’t fix his problem at the appointment get them to jag him up so he can’t feel it for a bit so he can sleep. Poor bugger. It’s awful having that.

How did the dentist go for him?
