My 40th is looming on the horizon and I really want to celebrate in style. The question is.... what?

Hit me with your ideas! I am up for anything except a bloody long plane trip.

you could get the eurostar to amsterdam? or you could go to ireland on the ferry and stay in a nice hotel with a spa?

Ricekrispie22 · 13/09/2019 19:21

Cruise from Southampton.

onemorecakeplease · 13/09/2019 20:34

We are going to stobo castle and spa for mine! Google it, it's amazing

TheABC · 13/09/2019 20:50

@sleepismysuperpower1, I like how you think! Perhaps make it a week-long adventure, going between cities in Europe?

@Ricekrispie22, interesting choice. Any tips if I go down this route?

@onemorecakeplease: I am jealous! Stobo Castle looks amazing. DH is strangely enthusiastic about this option after hearing about the Coyote Outdoor Centre nearby. Confused

ooh this sounds lovely, you could get the eurostar to Amsterdam, and then go from there to bonn in germany by train, then to stuttgart and Lyon in France before back home

bridgetreilly · 14/09/2019 12:16

If you can bear one plane journey of about 6-7 hours (or two shorter ones) I can HIGHLY recommend my 40th birthday trip:

Fly to New York (or stop off for a couple of nights in Iceland, which is what I did), have a fun time there, then get on the Queen Mary II for a transatlantic crossing back to Southampton with no jet lag. We got a massive free upgrade to the Princess Grill state rooms and it was AMAZING.

Group camping trip, it was a blast

SinkGirl · 14/09/2019 12:20

If it were me and I didn’t have young kids, I’d say a cruise - I went on one a few years ago and it was awesome. Got to travel to lots of different places without having physically to unpack / travel, had a lovely cabin with a balcony and an amazing dining package in a lovely restaurant, the food was great.... had a brilliant time.

Sadly we can’t go away so for DH’s 40th we went to a very fancy hotel for a spa day and an amazing lunch. Had a brilliant time.

TheABC · 15/09/2019 13:34

Thank you for all these ideas. I admit, I have not considered a cruise before - DH is the adventurous type (for his 40th, we are caving and canyoning), so I am worried he will get bored.

I like the idea of Iceland - and a group camping trip (obviously not at the same time)..

I went to Rome for mine. DH and I spent 4 days looking at ancient ruins and eating pasta. It was brilliant.

For DH's we did a weekend with his extended family in Norfolk, with Sunday lunch at Morston Hall.

DH's other idea was walking in Saas-Fee. The youth hostel there has a nice spa and pool which have amazing views up the valley to the mountains.

TheABC · 15/09/2019 16:06

@MinnieMountain, thanks for sharing. Love the idea of going to Rome or else wandering the Alps enjoying the immaculate scenery. Now I need to ponder costs, time and who can take the kids....

For my DH i booked him nora battys cottage in holmfirth and invited our friends. He loved it and its a lovely village.

For mine we had a party. It was just what i wanted and worth every penny.

Also for my husbands 40th we went to Aphrodite lodge in windermere. We have been there twice and it is amazing for a couple.
