I recently applied for and was invited to interview for a position at a very well known luxury car firm, in one of the franchised garages

Part way through the interview, the branch manager went off on a bit of a tangent about the kind of cars that she likes. Said that she actually doesn’t like the cars made by the company that she works for and she is a much bigger fan of their direct competitor and her dream is to own one of their cars instead

She went on to ask me what I drive, and when I said that I actually drive a car made by and sold from that exact garage a few years ago, she responded with “well that’s a shame you made such a poor decision but I’m sure you know the reputation that comes with driving one of them don’t you” Shock

SURELY that is not the way to encourage new staff to work for you!? Aren’t you supposed to sing their praises even if you secretly don’t like them, surely you don’t admit that and then insult the people that own cars made by the brand you’re representing!? I really feel like the garage owners need to know what’s being said by someone meant to maintain their image, but don’t want to look like I’m telling tales Confused I did actually get offered the job but turned it down due to how uncomfortable she made me feel

Why would you put someone's job in jeopardy? Maybe she was having a shite day, maybe she doesn't like her job, maybe her manager is a dick and her feelings came out in this way.

I don't get why you would bring trouble to someone's door at all. It doesn't affect you in any way whatsoever.

Maybe she's being made to interview people for her job. If she puts people off they might keep her on Grin

bloodywhitecat · 13/09/2019 14:43

Maybe she was testing to see what your reaction would be and if you would defend the brand?

Rystall · 13/09/2019 15:16

I absolutely think she was testing you. You were supposed to ‘sell’ the brand you were interviewing for back to her.

dollydaydream114 · 13/09/2019 15:40

Agree with others that she was probably testing you.

Even if she wasn't, I also don't think there's anything to be gained from snitching to the company about her. If she'd been bullying or breached equality legislation or been personally unfair to you, that would be a reason to complain, but she didn't. The only reason you'd be telling the company what she said would be to get someone into trouble because you didn't click with them at a job interview, and that's a bit of a dick move really. I'm sure she has performance reviews etc and that the company already know whether they're happy with her work. You don't need to poke your beak in.
