To ask if this is a PayPal scam or genuine

Posting for traffic, sorry.
Been trying to sell two nearly new electrical goods on Facebook marketplace for a few weeks now. I've been contacted by someone wanting to buy both but they live quite a bit away from me so collection not possible. They've asked if I can post and they'll PayPal me the money. Now something is ringing a bell in my mind of scam artists doing this then recalling the PayPal payment, am I right in avoiding this like the plague? Or am I being over cautious? Would love to get them sold of course but my spidey senses are heightened over this!

Scam. Cash on collection only. They’ll ask if they can PayPal you the courier costs too

colourlessgreenidea · 13/09/2019 11:44

It’s a very well-known scam. Steer well clear.

Lulu2106 · 13/09/2019 11:44

I think if they pay 'friends and family' then they can reverse the transaction, that's if they aren't genuine. Could they not pay you via bank transfer?

DifficultSituation19 · 13/09/2019 11:45

I dunno 🤷‍♀️. I sold some tickets through Facebook recently and was paid by PayPal, no issues.

Scam.

(The link is regarding gumtree, but the scam details are essentially the same)

If they try to make a charge back, PayPal will want a post office receipt to show you have posted them. If you send them recorded, you’ll have the number.

What’s the postage though? Are the heavy? Is it worth it? Why is someone from far away looking at your local Facebook page?

Try ebay, much more security, offer postage, put the postage cost on tv existing. All covered.

Thanks everyone, confirmed what I thought. I think the gumtree link was what I've came across before that was rattling the alarm bells in my mind.

Realist on eBay. Tell your buyer to buy through there if they want postage.

They won’t if they are not genuine!

I don’t understand how this is a scam. If she invoices through PayPal and posts with proof of postage, how can it be a scam? It’s essentially the same as eBay.

It’s different if they collect and want to pay via PayPal.

bidstonbabe · 13/09/2019 12:20

Zebraaa fake letter from PayPal saying they have paid and will be released once items are posted apparently.

That’s why ebay (who own PayPal) are safer, it shows in your eBay account when it’s paid.
